JEE Main 2027: Update Aadhaar and Documents Before Registration Opens

Key takeaways

  • As of 25 September 2026, JEE Main 2027 registration has not opened; NTA has not released the 2027 Information Bulletin.
  • Last cycle, NTA's 29 September 2025 advisory asked students to update Aadhaar with the correct name and date of birth as per the Class 10 certificate, plus a latest photograph, address and father's name.
  • UIDAI charges Rs 75 for a demographic update such as name or date of birth and Rs 125 for a biometric update; online document update on myAadhaar is free till 14 June 2027.
  • UIDAI says an update can take up to 90 days, though about 90% are completed within 30 days, so start the correction this week.
  • UIDAI allows the name to be updated only twice and the date of birth only once in a lifetime, so get it right with your Class 10 certificate in hand.

JEE Main 2027 registration has not opened yet, so this is the right time to get your Aadhaar update done. Your Aadhaar name, date of birth and photo should match your Class 10 certificate before the form goes live, because NTA gave exactly this advice last cycle and some fields cannot be changed later.

This guide covers the current registration status, what NTA's official advisory said, how to update Aadhaar through UIDAI (fees and timelines), where APAAR stands, and which category and PwD documents to prepare. It ends with a one-page checklist.

Has JEE Main 2027 registration started?

No. As of 25 September 2026, NTA has not opened JEE Main 2027 registration or released the 2027 Information Bulletin. NTA's examination calendar lists Session 1 on 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and 30 January 2027 (tentative). In the last two cycles the form opened on 28 October 2024 and 31 October 2025.

So you likely have four to five weeks. For the full schedule and expected last date, see our JEE Main 2027 exam date and registration guide, and for every IIT-related exam on one page, our IIT exam dates 2027 calendar.

What did NTA advise about Aadhaar before the last JEE Main registration?

On 29 September 2025, NTA issued a public notice for JEE Main 2026 asking every aspirant to update three documents before applying: Aadhaar, UDID card (for PwD candidates) and category certificate. Aadhaar was to carry the correct name and date of birth as per the Class 10 certificate, a latest photograph, address and father's name.

NTA said this was to avoid "discrepancies, grievances or rejection at a later stage". The notice said the UDID card should be valid, updated and renewed, and the EWS, SC, ST or OBC-NCL certificate should be updated and valid.

The JEE Main 2026 bulletin repeated the point twice: once in the application section and once in the exam-day instructions, where it said the Aadhaar details are used for verification at the examination centre. It also said the score card is generated as per the name in your Class 10 certificate.

NTA has not issued a 2027 version of this advisory as of 25 September 2026. News reports this week are referring to last year's notice. Treat it as the best available guide and follow any fresh notice on nta.ac.in or jeemain.nta.nic.in.

Which Aadhaar details should you check against your Class 10 certificate?

Check five things: full name spelling, date of birth, father's name, a recent photograph and your current address. Your name and date of birth must match the Class 10 certificate exactly, including the surname and the order of words. Also check that the mobile number linked to Aadhaar works, because OTP-based e-KYC depends on it.

Typical problems we see are a missing surname, initials instead of the full name, a spelling difference, a wrong birth year from an old enrolment, or a childhood photo that no longer looks like you. Our article on JEE Main 2027 registration mistakes explains what goes wrong inside the form itself; this page is only about getting documents ready before that.

How do you update Aadhaar name, date of birth or photo?

Name, date of birth, gender, photo and biometric updates are done at an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre, with original supporting documents. Address and proof-of-identity or proof-of-address documents can be updated online on the myAadhaar portal. After any update, you get an Update Request Number (URN) to track the status.

  1. Book an appointment at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra through UIDAI's website, or find a nearby enrolment centre (many post offices and banks run one).
  2. Carry your original Class 10 certificate or mark sheet and a valid proof document from UIDAI's list of supporting documents.
  3. Ask for all corrections in one visit, check the acknowledgement slip and save the URN.
  4. Track the status on myAadhaar, and download the updated e-Aadhaar only after the status shows completed.

UIDAI's FAQ says the name can be updated only twice and the date of birth only once in a lifetime; gender also only once. Changes beyond these limits need an exception request through a UIDAI regional office, which takes time. So get it right in one go.

How much does an Aadhaar update cost in 2026?

A demographic update such as name, date of birth, gender, address or mobile number costs Rs 75 when done on its own. A biometric update (photo, fingerprints and iris) costs Rs 125. Mandatory biometric updates done between ages 15 and 17 are free. Online document update on the myAadhaar portal is free till 14 June 2027.

Most JEE Main 2027 applicants are 17 or 18. If you are still under 18 and never did your second mandatory biometric update, this is the time, because it is free and it also refreshes your photo.

How long does an Aadhaar update take?

UIDAI says an Aadhaar update can take up to 90 days, and normally about 90% of requests are completed within 30 days. With the JEE Main form expected around late October, a request made this week will most likely be done in time, but a request made in November may not be.

If your update is rejected, the status shows a reason; fix it and reapply quickly. Fill the JEE form only after the status shows completed. If a request is older than 90 days, UIDAI asks you to call its toll-free helpline 1947.

Is APAAR ID needed for JEE Main 2027?

NTA has not said APAAR is compulsory for 2027. The JEE Main 2026 application form had a separate APAAR ID page that asked whether you have an APAAR ID. The 2027 bulletin will confirm whether this continues, so keep your APAAR details ready if you have them.

APAAR is a 12-digit academic ID. For school students it is generated by the school through the UDISE+ system after verifying your details, and parental consent is needed for students under 18. Once generated, it appears in your DigiLocker. The name in your school record must match Aadhaar for it to be created, which is one more reason to fix Aadhaar first.

Which category and PwD documents should you prepare now?

You do not upload a category certificate with the JEE Main form, but NTA's advisory asked students to keep it updated and valid, and it is checked in original at counselling. PwD candidates need a valid UDID card or disability certificate. Start both now because government offices take weeks.

  • OBC-NCL: your caste must be in the central OBC list, and the certificate must show non-creamy layer status. SC/ST certificates should carry the same name as Class 10. In JoSAA 2026, OBC-NCL and EWS certificates had to be issued on or after 1 April 2026 (or be online-verifiable and valid), so expect to need a fresh one after April 2027.
  • EWS: the certificate is issued for a financial year; plan to renew it for counselling.
  • PwD: in the 2026 cycle, UDID details were verified from the government UDID portal; those without a UDID card could upload a disability certificate. Apply or renew on the UDID portal early.

Counselling rules are covered in our JoSAA counselling 2027 guide.

What is the complete JEE Main 2027 pre-registration checklist?

Finish these items before NTA opens the form. The table shows each document, what to check and whether the rule is official or expected.

What should you do next?

A JEE Main 2027 Aadhaar update done this week saves you from stress in November. Do these steps in order:

  • Put your Class 10 certificate next to your Aadhaar and compare every letter and digit today.
  • If anything differs, book an Aadhaar centre visit this week and save the URN.
  • Check that your Aadhaar-linked mobile receives OTPs.
  • Ask your school about your APAAR ID.
  • Start the category or UDID renewal if yours is old or has a name mismatch.
  • Scan your photo, signature and Class 10 certificate in the 2026 sizes, and recheck once the 2027 bulletin is out.
  • Watch nta.ac.in and jeemain.nta.nic.in for the bulletin, and apply only there.

Frequently asked questions

Has JEE Main 2027 registration started?

No. As of 25 September 2026, NTA has not opened JEE Main 2027 registration or released the 2027 Information Bulletin. NTA's calendar lists Session 1 on 22 to 30 January 2027 (tentative). In the last two cycles the form opened on 28 October 2024 and 31 October 2025, so late October 2026 is the likely window.

Should my Aadhaar name match my Class 10 certificate for JEE Main?

Yes. NTA's advisory for JEE Main 2026 asked students to update Aadhaar with the correct name and date of birth as per the Class 10 certificate. The 2026 bulletin also said the score card is generated as per the name in the Class 10 certificate. A mismatch can cause problems at the exam centre and at counselling.

How much does it cost to change name or date of birth in Aadhaar?

As per UIDAI's current charges, a demographic update such as name, date of birth, gender, address or mobile number costs Rs 75 when done separately. A biometric update (photo, fingerprints, iris) costs Rs 125, but mandatory biometric updates between ages 15 and 17 are free. Online document update on myAadhaar is free till 14 June 2027.

How long does an Aadhaar update take?

UIDAI's FAQ says an Aadhaar update can take up to 90 days, and normally about 90% of update requests are completed within 30 days. Track the request with the Update Request Number (URN) on the myAadhaar portal. If it is older than 90 days, call UIDAI's toll-free number 1947.

How many times can I change my date of birth in Aadhaar?

UIDAI allows the date of birth to be updated only once and the name only twice in a lifetime. Gender can also be updated only once. Beyond these limits, you need an exception request through UIDAI's regional office. So use your Class 10 certificate as the reference and check every letter before submitting.

Is APAAR ID compulsory for JEE Main 2027?

NTA has not said so for 2027. The JEE Main 2026 application form had a separate APAAR ID page asking whether you have an APAAR ID. APAAR IDs are generated through your school on the UDISE+ system with parental consent for students under 18, and appear in DigiLocker. Keep it ready if you have one and follow the 2027 bulletin.

Do PwD candidates need a UDID card for JEE Main?

In the 2026 cycle, UDID details were verified from the government UDID portal. Candidates without a UDID card could upload a disability certificate, which NTA could verify with the issuing authority. NTA's September 2025 advisory asked PwD candidates to keep the UDID card valid, updated and renewed. Apply early on the UDID portal because it takes time.
