NITs for Low JEE Main Rank 2027: Closing Ranks and Home State Quota

The NITs for low JEE Main rank are mostly the North-East and newer NITs: Agartala, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Srinagar and Puducherry. In the final round of JoSAA 2026, their least-demanded branches closed at about 58,000-69,000 for Other State OPEN candidates, and much deeper for home-state candidates.

Which NITs can you get with a low JEE Main rank?

With a CRL rank of about 45,000-69,000, you can realistically target Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and some ECE seats at the North-East NITs, NIT Srinagar and NIT Puducherry, plus lower branches at bigger NITs like Raipur, Patna, Rourkela and Andhra Pradesh. Beyond about 69,000, Other State OPEN seats did not exist in 2026.

All figures below are from the official JoSAA opening and closing rank pages. We quote Round 5 of 2026 (the final JoSAA round, released on 16 July 2026) and Round 6 of 2025 (the final round that year). The category is OPEN and the pool is gender-neutral unless we say otherwise. Treat each number as approximate.

What were the NIT closing ranks for Other State candidates in 2026?

For Other State candidates in JoSAA 2026, CSE at the least popular NITs closed at 41,000-43,000, while Civil and Mechanical at the same NITs closed at 57,000-65,000. The table shows CSE and the deepest programme at each low-cutoff NIT.

Two patterns stand out. First, CSE at the smaller NITs is not a "low rank" seat any more; it closes 20,000-25,000 ranks before Civil. Second, 2026 closing ranks were a little higher (numerically) than 2025, partly because a record 15.38 lakh candidates appeared in JEE Main 2026.

NIT Manipur also had 5-year dual-degree (B.Tech + M.Tech) programmes in 2026. Its Civil dual degree closed at 64,980 for Other State candidates. Check the programme duration before you lock a choice.

Which branches are easiest to get at NITs?

Civil, Mechanical, Metallurgy and Materials, Biotechnology, Chemical, Production, Mining and 5-year science programmes (Chemistry, Physics) usually close last. ECE and Electrical come in the middle. CSE, AI, Data Science and Mathematics and Computing close first, even at smaller NITs.

Here is how the branches lined up at three North-East NITs in 2026 (Other State, OPEN):

• NIT Nagaland: CSE 42,326, ECE 47,733, EEE 52,229, Electronics and Instrumentation 55,144, Mechanical 59,028, Civil 64,955.
• NIT Mizoram: CSE 41,038, Mathematics and Computing 42,029, ECE 49,700, Electrical 52,894, Mechanical 57,367, Chemical Science and Technology 57,927, Civil 62,780.
• NIT Manipur (4-year): CSE 43,239, ECE 47,217, Electrical 52,659, Mechanical 54,811, Civil 62,614.

How much does home state quota help at NITs?

Home state quota is the single biggest help for a low rank. Every NIT keeps 50% of seats for candidates from its own state or UT. In small states, few candidates compete, so closing ranks go into lakhs. In 2026, NIT Mizoram CSE closed at 5,22,326 for Mizoram candidates but at 41,038 for others.

NIT Srinagar has separate J&K and Ladakh quotas. In 2026, its J&K quota closed Civil at 1,05,941 and CSE at 47,564, while the Ladakh quota closed CSE at 2,02,569.

Your home state for JoSAA is generally the state where you passed Class 12, not your domicile certificate. The North-East NITs have special rules for some neighbouring states, so read the JoSAA business rules every year.

What is the NIT Patna cutoff for a low rank?

NIT Patna is popular, so it is not a low-rank NIT for CSE. In JoSAA 2026, its B.Tech CSE closed at 17,282 (Other State) and 18,862 (Bihar). The deepest programmes were Material Science and Engineering (5-year) at 53,805 and Civil at about 50,873 for Other State candidates.

• ECE: 21,828 (OS), 25,462 (HS)
• Electrical: 27,263 (OS), 34,646 (HS)
• Mechanical: 37,779 (OS), 42,495 (HS)
• Chemical Technology (5-year): 50,691 (OS), 55,248 (HS)

Do girls and reserved-category students get NITs at lower ranks?

Yes. The female-only (supernumerary) pool and category seats have their own closing ranks. In JoSAA 2026, female-only Other State seats closed at 77,217 for NIT Manipur Civil and 56,386 for NIT Manipur CSE, well beyond the gender-neutral closing ranks for the same seats.

For OBC-NCL, SC, ST and EWS seats, JoSAA compares your category rank, not your CRL. In the 2026 final round, the deepest Other State category closing ranks at NITs were roughly:

• OBC-NCL: about 22,900 category rank (NIT Agartala, 5-year Chemistry)
• EWS: about 10,500 category rank (NIT Agartala, 5-year Chemistry)
• SC: about 10,400 category rank (NIT Agartala, 5-year Chemistry)
• ST: about 3,900 category rank (NIT Agartala, 5-year Chemistry)

Home-state category seats went far deeper. For example, OBC-NCL home-state seats at NIT Manipur closed as far as 3,55,819 (category rank) in 2026.

Which IIITs can you get with the same rank?

With a 45,000-70,000 rank, many IIITs are open to you. In JoSAA 2026, IIIT Manipur, IIIT Agartala, IIIT Bhagalpur, IIIT Kalyani, IIIT Dharwad, IIIT Raichur, IIITDM Kurnool and IIIT Vadodara's Diu campus closed some programmes between about 45,000 and 70,000. IIITs mostly have All India seats with no home-state quota.

All ranks are OPEN, gender-neutral, All India quota, JoSAA 2026 final round. Several newer IIITs run from temporary campuses, so check hostel and lab facilities before choosing.

How should you fill NIT choices with a low rank?

Fill your choices in order of genuine preference, add every NIT, IIIT and GFTI programme where your rank is within about 10% of the 2025 or 2026 closing rank, and then register for CSAB. Never leave out a seat you would accept just because you think you won't get it.

1. Start with a few "dream" choices, even if they closed 5,000-10,000 ranks before you.
2. Add realistic NIT choices: North-East NIT core branches, then lower branches at bigger NITs.
3. Add IIITs and GFTIs as safety choices. Many GFTIs closed beyond 1 lakh in 2026.
4. Use the home-state and female-only pools if you are eligible. JoSAA considers them automatically, but only for the choices you fill.
5. After Round 5, register for CSAB special rounds for NIT+ seats.

Don't trust "NIT management quota" or "direct NIT admission" offers. NIT B.Tech seats for Indian students are filled only through JoSAA and CSAB.

What changed between JoSAA 2025 and JoSAA 2026?

In 2026, most NIT closing ranks for low-demand programmes were a few thousand ranks higher (numerically) than in 2025. One reason is the record JEE Main turnout: about 15.38 lakh unique candidates appeared in 2026. JoSAA 2026 also had five rounds, while JoSAA 2025 had six.

Some examples from the final rounds (Other State, OPEN, gender-neutral):

• NIT Mizoram CSE: 37,751 in 2025, 41,038 in 2026.
• NIT Manipur CSE: 33,098 in 2025, 43,239 in 2026.
• NIT Sikkim Civil: 54,268 in 2025, 61,708 in 2026.
• NIT Puducherry CSE: 19,758 in 2025, 19,869 in 2026 (almost no change).

Home-state ranks moved more unevenly. NIT Sikkim's home-state CSE closing rank fell from 1,85,001 in 2025 to 1,18,264 in 2026, while NIT Meghalaya's home-state CSE went from 59,949 to 1,27,321. Small pools swing a lot, so always look at more than one year.

What if you don't get any NIT with your rank?

If NITs are out of reach, move to GFTIs, state counselling and JEE Main based private colleges in the same season. Many GFTIs closed programmes beyond 1 lakh in JoSAA 2026, and state processes like UPTAC, UGEAC, REAP and HSTES admit students with much larger ranks.

Some GFTIs that closed beyond 1 lakh (All India, OPEN) in 2026 include SMVDU Katra, SLIET Longowal, Tezpur University, Mizoram University, NEHU Shillong and Central University of Jharkhand. Are the North-East NITs a good choice?

For most students, yes. North-East NITs charge the same regulated NIT fees, give the NIT degree and alumni network, and many have improving placements. The trade-offs are distance from home, smaller campuses at some newer NITs, and fewer on-campus recruiters than older NITs.

Final Word: your NIT action plan for 2027

NITs for low JEE Main rank do exist, but mostly in core branches, North-East campuses and home-state or special pools. Here is what to do next:

• Check your CRL and category rank on the NTA scorecard after each JEE Main result.
• Compare your rank with both 2025 and 2026 closing ranks for every NIT programme you would join.
• Note which home-state, J&K/Ladakh, Goa or female-only pools you qualify for.
• Build a list of 100+ choices, including IIITs and GFTIs as safety options.
• Register for CSAB special rounds after JoSAA.
• Keep state counselling and a JEE Main based private college as backup.
