JEE Main Eligibility 2027: 75% Criteria, Top 20 Percentile, Attempts

JEE Main eligibility is simple for the exam itself: there is no age limit and no minimum Class 12 marks, as long as you pass Class 12 within the allowed years. The 75% rule applies only at admission: to join an IIT, NIT, IIIT or GFTI, you need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD) or a place in your board's top 20 percentile.

This guide explains who can write JEE Main 2027, how many attempts you get, how the 75% and top 20 percentile rules work, what happened with the CBSE marks controversy in 2026, and what NIOS and other students should know.

What is the eligibility for JEE Main 2027?

To write JEE Main 2027, you should expect to need Class 12 (or equivalent) passed in 2025 or 2026, or be appearing in 2027. There is no age limit and no minimum percentage to sit for the exam. These rules follow the 2026 bulletin, and NTA will confirm them in the 2027 bulletin.

In the JEE Main 2026 bulletin, NTA allowed candidates who passed Class 12 in 2024 or 2025, or were appearing in 2026. Those who passed in 2023 or earlier were not eligible. Applying the same pattern to 2027 gives the table below.

Passing year means the first year your board declared you "pass" in Class 12. NTA's bulletin gives an example: if you passed Class 12 with PCB in 2023 and cleared Mathematics separately in 2024, your passing year is still 2023. An improvement exam is not treated as a fresh first attempt either.

Which exams count as Class 12 equivalent?

NTA accepts a long list of qualifying exams. These include CBSE, CISCE and state boards; intermediate or two-year pre-university exams; the NDA Joint Services Wing course; the NIOS Senior Secondary exam with at least five subjects; the Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational exam; a three-year diploma recognised by AICTE or a state technical board; GCE A levels; the IB Diploma; and BOSSE Sikkim. Boards from outside India need an AIU equivalence certificate.

How many attempts are allowed in JEE Main?

You can write JEE Main for three consecutive years, starting in the year you appear for Class 12. Each year has two sessions (January and April), so you get up to six attempts in total. Your best score in each year's two sessions is used for that year's rank.

Plan your attempts wisely. JEE Advanced, which is needed for IITs, allows only two attempts in two consecutive years, starting from your Class 12 year. So a student who appears in Class 12 in 2027 can write JEE Advanced only in 2027 and 2028, even though JEE Main is open until 2029.

Is there an age limit for JEE Main or JEE Advanced?

There is no age limit for JEE Main. JEE Advanced does have one: for 2026, candidates had to be born on or after 1 October 2001, with five years of relaxation for SC, ST and PwD candidates (born on or after 1 October 1996). If the pattern continues, the 2027 cut-off date is expected to move forward by one year.

What is the 75% criteria for NIT, IIIT and IIT admission?

To get a seat in an NIT, IIIT, IIEST or GFTI through JoSAA or CSAB, you must have passed Class 12 with at least five subjects and 75% aggregate marks in those five subjects (65% for SC, ST and PwD). IITs apply the same 75% or top 20 percentile condition along with the JEE Advanced rank.

This rule is not checked when you register for JEE Main. It is checked at the time of seat allotment and document verification. Many students discover the problem only at counselling, so check your marks early.

Which five subjects are counted?

For B.E./B.Tech seats in the NIT+ system, the 2026 bulletin (quoting CSAB) says you must have passed Class 12 with:

• Physics
• Mathematics
• A language
• One of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology or a technical vocational subject
• Any one subject other than the four above

IITs need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as compulsory subjects. If your board gives more than five subjects, JoSAA's business rules explain which marks are counted, usually the best eligible language and the best remaining subject. If your board gives grades instead of marks, you need a document from the board that converts grades into percentage. Keep it ready before counselling.

The 75% rule is about your aggregate across five subjects, not just PCM. A strong language or fifth subject can pull your aggregate above 75%, and a weak one can pull it down. Calculate it early using your board's marks.

What is the top 20 percentile rule?

If you score below 75% (or 65%), you can still be eligible if you are within the top 20 percentile of successful candidates in your Class 12 board exam, in your own category. Each board sends its category-wise cutoff marks (out of 500) to JoSAA, which publishes them every June.

Here are some real 2026 cutoffs from the JoSAA list published in June 2026. The figures are marks out of 500.

This table shows why the top 20 percentile route matters most for some state boards. A UP Board General student with 352 out of 500 (70.4%) or a Bihar Board General student with 339 (67.8%) met the top 20 percentile rule in 2026, even though they were below 75%. For CBSE General students, the cutoff (418, or 83.6%) was above 75%, so the 75% route was easier.

Several boards did not send data by 24 June 2026, including NIOS, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and IB. For such boards, JoSAA says the candidate must get a certificate from the board, or else the CBSE cutoff for that category is used.

Was there any IIT admission CBSE marks relaxation in 2026?

No, the 75% rule itself was not relaxed. In early June 2026, after complaints about CBSE Class 12 marking, IIT Roorkee (the JEE Advanced 2026 organiser) said there would be no relaxation because candidates from 36 boards take part. But it allowed students below the cutoff to join JoSAA provisionally.

As reported by Careers360 and other outlets, students who qualified JEE Advanced 2026 but had less than 75% (or 65%) could register, fill choices and get a provisional seat. To keep the seat, they had to submit a revised marksheet, from re-evaluation, compartment or improvement, meeting the criteria by 15 July 2026.

This was a one-time procedural step for the 2026 cycle. Do not assume the same window will be offered in 2027. If you are a Class 12 student in 2027, aim to cross 75% comfortably rather than relying on re-evaluation.

Can NIOS students take JEE Main and get IIT or NIT seats?

Yes. The NIOS Senior Secondary exam with at least five subjects is a valid qualifying exam for JEE Main. For JoSAA admission, NIOS students need 75% (65% for SC, ST, PwD) or a top 20 percentile certificate, and IIT aspirants also need Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Some points specific to NIOS students:

• State of eligibility: NTA's bulletin says NIOS candidates must choose the state where their study centre is located. This matters for NIT home state quota.
• Top 20 percentile: NIOS did not send its cutoff to JoSAA by 24 June 2026. Without a certificate from NIOS, the CBSE cutoff for your category is used.
• Subjects: Make sure your five subjects include Physics and Mathematics, plus Chemistry for IITs.
• Passing year: NIOS results come out in several exam cycles. Your passing year is the one in which you were first declared pass.

What if you do not meet the 75% criteria?

If you are below 75% and outside the top 20 percentile, you cannot take JoSAA seats at IITs, NITs, IIITs or GFTIs. But you can still use your JEE Main score in many state counselling processes, state colleges and private universities, which often have lower Class 12 requirements.

Your realistic options are:

• Improvement exam: If your board allows it, an improvement or compartment exam can raise your aggregate, as long as the revised marksheet is ready before counselling deadlines.
• State counselling: Many states fill seats using JEE Main scores with their own eligibility rules. The common AICTE norm for B.Tech is a pass in Physics and Mathematics with at least 45% in the qualifying subjects (40% for reserved categories), but each state sets its final rule. What is the eligibility for JEE Advanced after JEE Main?

To write JEE Advanced, you must be among the top 2,50,000 candidates in JEE Main Paper 1 across all categories, meet the age limit, be within two attempts in two consecutive years, and not have already joined an IIT. In 2026, the JEE Main general category cutoff for this was 93.4123549 percentile.

Final word: check your eligibility before you prepare

JEE Main eligibility is easy to meet for the exam, but the 75% or top 20 percentile rule decides whether your rank can turn into an IIT, NIT or IIIT seat. Use this checklist now, not at counselling time:

• Confirm your Class 12 passing year falls within the allowed three years.
• Calculate your five-subject aggregate using your board's marks.
• If you are below 75% (or 65%), check your board's category-wise top 20 percentile cutoff on josaa.nic.in.
• Make sure your subjects include Physics and Mathematics, and Chemistry if you want IITs.
• NIOS and other boards without published cutoffs: ask your board for a top 20 percentile certificate early.
• Count your remaining JEE Main and JEE Advanced attempts and plan both sessions.
