Colleges for Low JEE Main Rank 2027: Options by Percentile Band

If you have a low JEE Main rank, you can still get a good B.Tech seat. The realistic options are less-demanded branches at newer NITs, IIITs and GFTIs through JoSAA and CSAB, home-state quota seats, state counselling colleges and private colleges that accept JEE Main scores. This guide lists colleges for low JEE Main rank by percentile band, using real closing ranks from the final rounds of JoSAA 2026 and 2025.

The JEE 2026 cycle is over, so use this page to plan for 2027. All closing ranks here are approximate. They come from the official JoSAA opening and closing rank data for OPEN, gender-neutral seats unless we say otherwise.

What counts as a low JEE Main rank in 2027?

For JoSAA, a CRL (Common Rank List) rank above about 60,000-70,000 is "low". In JoSAA 2026, no NIT Other State OPEN seat closed beyond 68,753. Beyond roughly 1.3 lakh, even GFTI All India seats mostly run out. So from there you depend on home-state quota, reserved categories, state counselling and private colleges.

A low rank is not the end. It only means you have to be smarter than a topper while filling choices. Branch, quota, gender pool and category matter much more for you than for someone with a 5,000 rank.

JEE Main 2026 had a record turnout. About 15.38 lakh unique candidates appeared across both sessions, according to data NTA released with the session 2 result. More candidates means that the same percentile gives you a bigger (worse) rank than it did a few years ago.

How do JEE Main percentile and rank convert?

A simple estimate is: Rank ≈ (100 − your percentile) × total candidates ÷ 100. With about 15.38 lakh candidates in 2026, 90 percentile works out to roughly 1.54 lakh rank and 80 percentile to about 3.08 lakh. Your actual CRL on the NTA scorecard can differ a little because of ties and normalisation.

Where did the last NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats close in JoSAA 2026?

In the final round of JoSAA 2026 (Round 5, released on 16 July 2026), the last Other State OPEN seats at NITs closed at around 60,000 to 69,000. IIIT seats closed up to about 70,000. GFTI All India seats went furthest, up to about 1.29 lakh. Home-state quota seats in small states went much further.

Closing ranks move every year. In 2026 most NIT Other State closing ranks were a few thousand ranks higher (numerically) than in 2025, partly because more candidates appeared. Treat every number here as a guide, not a promise.

Which colleges can you get at 95-97 percentile (about 46,000-77,000 rank)?

At 95-97 percentile you are still in the JoSAA game for NITs, mostly through core branches at the North-East and newer NITs, plus most IIITs and nearly all GFTIs. CSE at the least popular NITs closed around 41,000-43,000 for Other State OPEN candidates in 2026, so it is possible only at the better end of this band.

NITs that are realistic in this band

• CSE: NIT Manipur (43,239), NIT Nagaland (42,326), NIT Mizoram (41,038), NIT Arunachal Pradesh (31,966) and NIT Sikkim (31,060) - Other State, JoSAA 2026 final round.
• ECE and Electrical: NIT Nagaland ECE 47,733, NIT Mizoram EE 52,894, NIT Manipur EE 52,659.
• Civil and Mechanical: mostly 50,000-65,000 at NIT Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim, Arunachal, Meghalaya, Agartala, Srinagar and Puducherry.
• Bigger NITs, lower branches: NIT Raipur Biomedical (57,731), NIT Andhra Pradesh Biotechnology (54,682), NIT Patna Material Science (53,805) and NIT Rourkela Life Science (55,092).

IIITs in this band

Most IIIT programmes closed between 30,000 and 57,000 in 2026. The ones that went deepest were IIIT Manipur (CSE 59,813, ECE 70,259), IIIT Bhagalpur (CSE 48,416), IIIT Agartala (CSE 50,027), IIIT Kalyani (ECE 50,809), IIITDM Kurnool (up to 55,564) and IIIT Vadodara's international campus at Diu (ECE 50,829).

Which colleges accept 90-95 percentile in JEE Main (about 77,000-1.54 lakh rank)?

At 90-95 percentile, NIT Other State OPEN seats are usually out of reach. Your real options are GFTIs, NIELIT campuses, NIT home-state quota, the female-only pool, reserved-category seats, CSAB special rounds, state counselling and private colleges. A girl or an OBC/SC/ST/EWS candidate in this band has many more JoSAA options.

NIT home-state quota in this band

Half of each NIT's seats go to candidates from the state where the NIT is located. In 2026, home-state OPEN candidates got NIT Puducherry EEE at 1,27,886, NIT Raipur Biomedical at 1,46,547, NIT Hamirpur Civil at 1,04,617, NIT Agartala ECE at 1,15,963 and NIT Arunachal Pradesh CSE at 1,02,529. NIT Srinagar's J&K quota closed Civil at 1,05,941.

Female-only and reserved-category seats

The female-only pool helps. In JoSAA 2026, female-only Other State seats closed at 77,217 for NIT Manipur Civil and 56,386 for NIT Manipur CSE. For OBC-NCL, SC, ST and EWS seats, JoSAA uses your category rank, so check your category rank on the scorecard, not just the CRL.

Outside JoSAA

Which colleges accept 80-90 percentile in JEE Main (about 1.54-3.08 lakh rank)?

With 80-90 percentile, JoSAA OPEN All India seats are nearly closed. You should focus on state counselling, private colleges and, if you qualify, deep home-state quotas in the North-East, Puducherry or Ladakh. Reserved-category candidates should still fill JoSAA and CSAB choices carefully.

These ranks are only for residents of those states or UTs, as defined by JoSAA's home-state rules.

State counselling

Several states admit students to government and private engineering colleges using JEE Main ranks. The big ones are UPTAC (Uttar Pradesh), Bihar UGEAC, HSTES (Haryana), REAP (Rajasthan), MP DTE, Odisha (OJEE counselling uses JEE Main for B.Tech), JAC Delhi, and the All India seats in Gujarat ACPC and Maharashtra CAP. What if your JEE Main percentile is below 70-80?

Below 70-80 percentile (rank beyond about 3-4.6 lakh), JoSAA works only for deep home-state quotas in a few small states. Your main routes are state counselling private colleges, private universities that accept JEE Main or their own tests, and other entrance exams. A B.Tech is still very much possible.

• North-East home-state quota: NIT Mizoram CSE closed at 5,22,326 and NIT Manipur Mechanical (dual degree) at 5,69,078 for home-state OPEN candidates in 2026.
• State counselling private colleges: AKTU-affiliated colleges under UPTAC, Haryana and Rajasthan private colleges, and MP private colleges often fill seats late in the process.
• Private universities: many accept 12th marks, their own entrance tests, or JEE Main.
• Other exams: BITSAT, VITEEE, COMEDK, MHT CET and EAPCET are separate chances. See our guide to BITSAT, VITEEE and COMEDK 2027.
• CUET UG: some central and state universities offer B.Tech through CUET. See our CUET UG 2027 guide.
• An IIT degree without JEE: the IIT Madras BS degree in Data Science or Electronic Systems admits students through its own qualifier, not JEE rank.

Always check that a private college is AICTE-approved (or a UGC-recognised university) before paying any fee. Ask for placement data in writing. Never pay agents for "guaranteed" NIT or management seats.

Do girls and reserved-category students get more JoSAA options?

Yes, a lot more. Female candidates compete in both the gender-neutral pool and the female-only (supernumerary) pool. OBC-NCL, SC, ST and EWS candidates are compared on their category rank, which is much smaller than their CRL. So a "low" CRL can still be a good category rank.

Here is what the JoSAA 2026 final round showed for the deepest NIT seats in the Other State quota:

Home-state category seats go even deeper. For example, OBC-NCL home-state seats at NIT Manipur closed as far as 3,55,819 (category rank), and SC home-state seats at NIT Arunachal Pradesh closed Civil at 1,25,625 (category rank) in 2026.

So if you belong to a reserved category, never judge your chances by the OPEN table alone. Look up your category rank on the NTA scorecard and compare it with the category closing ranks on the JoSAA website.

How do CSAB special rounds help students with a low rank?

CSAB special rounds fill seats at NITs, IIITs and GFTIs that stay vacant after the last JoSAA round. IITs do not take part. For many low-rank students, CSAB is where a North-East NIT, a newer IIIT or a GFTI seat finally comes through, because students who got better seats elsewhere leave these seats empty.

In 2026, JoSAA ended with Round 5 in mid-July, and CSAB registration opened in late July. You must register and fill choices again for CSAB; your JoSAA choices are not carried over. CSAB also asks for a participation or seat fee, so read the CSAB business rules before registering.

A practical tip: if you are sitting on a state counselling or private seat when CSAB starts, check both refund policies before deciding. Many students lose money by paying twice without reading the rules.

Which option fits your band: a quick summary

If you want a one-screen answer, use this table. It combines JoSAA 2026 closing ranks with the state and private options described above. Your category, gender and home state can move you one band higher.

Use this only as a starting map. The final decision should come from official closing ranks for the exact programme, quota and category you are eligible for.

What mistakes do low-rank students make most often?

The biggest mistakes are filling too few choices, skipping state counselling, ignoring category and home-state ranks, and paying agents for "guaranteed" seats. Each one can cost you a seat that was actually within reach.

• Filling only 10-20 JoSAA choices. Low-rank seats are spread across many institutes. Fill widely.
• Waiting for JoSAA to end. Many state and private deadlines close in June, while JoSAA is still running.
• Looking at CSE only. A core branch at an NIT or GFTI can be a better deal than no seat at all.
• Trusting old percentile-to-rank charts. With 15.38 lakh candidates in 2026, the same percentile now means a bigger rank.
• Missing the 75% criterion. NITs, IIITs and GFTIs need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC/ST) or a top-20-percentile board score.

How can you get more out of a low rank in JoSAA and CSAB?

Fill many choices, put lower-demand branches at newer NITs, IIITs and GFTIs lower in your list, use the float option, and register for CSAB special rounds after JoSAA. In 2026, JoSAA had five rounds and CSAB registration opened in late July for vacant NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats.

1. Fill 100+ choices. Put dream choices at the top and safe ones (GFTIs, IIITs, lower NIT branches) at the bottom. There is no penalty for filling more.
2. Use every quota you have. Home state, female-only, category and PwD seats all have separate closing ranks.
3. Look at 2025 and 2026 together. If a seat closed around your rank in both years, it is a fair target.
4. Don't skip CSAB. Vacant seats after JoSAA go to CSAB special rounds, and some GFTI and NE NIT seats go even deeper there.
5. Keep a backup seat. Take a state or private seat as a backup if the rules allow a refund, and read the refund policy first.

Is a lower branch at an NIT better than CSE at a private college?

There is no single right answer. A lower branch at an NIT gives you low fees, a strong alumni network and the chance to switch to tech roles later. CSE at a good private college gives direct subject depth but costs much more. Compare fees, placements, branch interest and location.

What should you do for the 2027 cycle?

If you are appearing in 2027, give both JEE Main sessions, apply to state counselling and at least two backup exams, and prepare a choice list using real closing ranks. NTA has not announced JEE Main 2027 dates yet. Based on the 2025 and 2026 pattern, session 1 is expected in January and session 2 in April 2027.

Colleges for low JEE Main rank are more than you think, but you have to search wider than the top NITs. Use this checklist:

• Note your CRL rank and category rank from the NTA scorecard.
• Match your band to the tables above. Mark 2025 and 2026 closing ranks for each target.
• List every quota you qualify for: home state, female-only, category, PwD.
• Register for JoSAA, then CSAB special rounds.
• Register for your state's counselling (and neighbouring states that allow outside candidates).
• Shortlist 3-5 private colleges that accept JEE Main and check their deadlines, often before JoSAA ends.
• Verify approvals, fees and refund rules before paying anything.
