What can you change in the GATE 2027 correction window?

The official brochure allows five kinds of change till 21 October 2026: category, test paper, exam city choices, personal details, and adding a new test paper. The official FAQs add that paper, city and category change requests are taken only after the application deadline, against additional payment.

FieldEditable till 21 Oct?What the official site says

Add a second paperYesAdding a new test paper is allowed; the pair must be an allowed two-paper combination
Exam city choicesYesCity change allowed after the application deadline, against additional payment
CategoryYesCategory change allowed after the application deadline, against additional payment

Anything else (email, mobile, DigiLocker account, photo ID)Not listedNot named as editable; do not assume you can change it

Sources: brochure section 3 (Important Dates) and the GATE 2027 FAQs page. The exact list of fields shown on GOAPS will be clear only when the window opens on 14 October.

Your name and date of birth must exactly match the original photo ID you will carry to the exam centre. The scorecard is issued in the name entered in the form. If there is a mismatch, fix it in this window.

What is the GATE 2027 correction fee?

IIT Madras has not published the exact fee for corrections. The brochure only says an additional fee may be applicable per change, and the FAQs say paper, city and category changes are against additional payment. As of 7 October 2026, the official fee page lists only the registration fees, not correction charges.

So do not trust any amount you see on social media. GOAPS will show the charge for each change before you pay. If you move to a category with a higher registration fee, or add a second paper, expect to pay more than a simple city change, but confirm the figure on the portal.

What cannot be done in the correction window?

You cannot register fresh, cancel your application or get a refund. The FAQs state that the fee is not refunded on withdrawal. Fields not named by IIT Madras, such as your registered email, mobile number or DigiLocker account, should be treated as not editable unless GOAPS shows them as open.

  • No new registrations: the late-fee window ends on 12 October 2026.
  • No refund: the registration fee is non-refundable, except for duplicate transactions.
  • No section change in the hall for XH: the brochure says your XH section (XH1 to XH6) is chosen in the form and cannot be changed during the exam. XE and XL sections are chosen in the exam itself.
  • No guaranteed city: the GATE committee can allot a city outside your choices for operational reasons.

Choosing the right paper matters more than any edit. If you are unsure between RA, ME, EE or IN, read who should take the GATE 2027 RA paper and our GATE 2027 syllabus and paper codes guide before you change anything.

How do you make corrections on GOAPS?

Log in to GOAPS from gate2027.iitm.ac.in with the same account you used to apply, open your application, edit only the fields that are unlocked, pay any fee shown, and download the updated application. Do this well before 21 October so that a failed payment does not cost you the change.

  1. Prepare first: decide exactly what you want to change, and keep the supporting document ready (for example, a category certificate or photo ID for a name correction).
  2. Log in to GOAPS through gate2027.iitm.ac.in during 14 to 21 October 2026.
  3. Open your application and look for the correction or edit option that IIT Madras enables in this window.
  4. Edit only what you need. For a city change, remember all three choices must be from one zone.
  5. Review the changes on the preview screen before you submit.
  6. Pay the additional fee if GOAPS shows one, and make sure the transaction is recorded.
  7. Download the updated application and keep it with your earlier confirmation page.

These steps follow the official process described in the brochure and FAQs. The exact buttons will be visible only after the window opens, so read any notice IIT Madras posts on 14 October.

What mistakes should you avoid in the GATE 2027 correction window?

The most common mistakes are waiting till 21 October, changing a field you did not need to change, picking a two-paper combination that is not allowed, and ignoring the separate defect emails. Each one can cost you a paper or a city choice.

  • Last-day rush: portals slow down near every deadline. Finish by 18 or 19 October.
  • Invalid paper pair: check the official two-paper combination list before adding a paper.
  • Cross-zone confusion: your zone comes from your first city choice; keep all three cities in that zone.
  • Ignoring defect messages: scrutiny defects (unclear photo or signature, document issues) come by email or SMS/WhatsApp with their own deadline. That is separate from this window.
  • Deleting DigiLocker: IIT Madras asked candidates not to delete their DigiLocker account after applying, since communication is linked to it.

What happens after the GATE 2027 correction window?

After 21 October, IIT Madras finishes scrutiny, and exam cities are notified on 4 January 2027. The admit card date is TBA; 4 January is not the admit card date. The exams run on 6-7, 13-14 and 20-21 February 2027, and the result is on 19 March 2027.

Your corrected details will appear on the admit card. Check your name, photo, paper and city as soon as it is out. For all dates in one place, see our complete GATE 2027 guide or the IIT exam dates 2027 calendar.

Final Word: What should you do next?

The GATE 2027 correction window is a one-week chance, 14 to 21 October 2026, to fix your paper, city, category or personal details. Use it only if something is actually wrong, and pay only the fee GOAPS shows.

  • Not registered yet: apply with late fee before 12 October 2026.
  • Registered: download your form now and check every field against your photo ID.
  • Need a change: log in to GOAPS between 14 and 18 October to leave a buffer.
  • Keep checking your email and SMS for scrutiny defects through October.
  • Mark 4 January 2027 for city allotment; the admit card date is TBA.
  • Plan how you will use your score with our IIT M.Tech admission via COAP and CCMT guide. If a younger sibling is still in the JEE race, our list of colleges for a low JEE Main rank is a good start.
