IIT M.Tech Admission 2027 via GATE: COAP, CCMT and IIT-wise Dates

IIT M.Tech admission 2027 will be based on a valid GATE score, a separate application to each IIT, and offer acceptance on the COAP portal. If you want an NIT, IIIT or other central institute instead, your M.Tech seat comes through CCMT counselling, which also uses GATE.

How does IIT M.Tech admission 2027 work?

IIT M.Tech admission 2027 has three stages. First, you need a valid GATE score from 2025, 2026 or 2027. Second, you apply on each IIT's own admission portal for the programmes you want. Third, you register on COAP, where IITs release offers in rounds and you accept, hold or reject them.

There is no single common application for IIT M.Tech. This is the most common mistake students make. Registering on COAP does not mean you have applied to any IIT.

2. Institute applications: IIT portals usually open in late March and close in April.
3. Shortlisting: most departments shortlist by GATE score. Some also hold a written test or interview, especially for certain specialisations or for non-GATE categories.
4. COAP rounds: offers usually start in May and continue into early July.
5. Reporting: joining is usually in late July or August.

When will IIT M.Tech admission 2027 applications open?

IITs have not announced 2027 dates yet. Based on the 2026 pattern, most IIT M.Tech portals are expected to open in late March 2027, soon after the GATE 2027 result on 19 March, and close between about 10 April and the end of April 2027. These dates are tentative.

The table below shows the 2026 windows as reference. Where the date comes from the IIT's own site we say "official"; others are as reported by education news sites and should be treated as approximate.

Newer IITs (such as Jodhpur, Mandi, Patna, Indore, Ropar, Gandhinagar, Tirupati, Palakkad, Dharwad, Bhilai, Goa and Jammu) and IIT (ISM) Dhanbad follow a similar March-April pattern. Each has its own portal and brochure.

Tip: IIT deadlines fall within two to three weeks of each other. Make a list of target IITs and programmes in February 2027 itself, keep scanned documents ready, and pay application fees early. Missing one portal means that IIT cannot offer you a seat on COAP.

What is COAP and how does COAP registration work?

COAP (Common Offer Acceptance Portal) is a shared portal where IITs publish M.Tech offers round by round. You register once using your GATE registration details. In each round you must choose Accept and Freeze, Retain and Wait, or Reject for your offer. COAP 2026 was coordinated by IIT Roorkee.

The COAP coordinating institute for 2027 has not been announced yet. The portal name for 2026 was coap2026.iitr.ac.in, and COAP registration opened after the GATE 2026 result.

Accept and Freeze vs Retain and Wait vs Reject

• Accept and Freeze: you take this seat and exit the process. You will get no further offers.
• Retain and Wait: you hold the current offer and wait for a better one. As per the 2026 rules, this option has limits (as reported, it could not be used after Round 4 and only a limited number of times for the same offer).
• Reject and Wait / Reject: you decline the current offer. Depending on the option, you either stay in the process or leave it.

If you do not respond in a round, your offer is treated as rejected. Check COAP at the start of every round and do not rely only on emails.

What is CCMT and who should use it?

CCMT (Centralized Counselling for M.Tech/M.Arch/M.Plan) fills GATE-based PG seats at NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes through one online counselling. IITs do not take part in CCMT. CCMT 2026 was hosted by NIT Agartala on ccmt.admissions.nic.in.

If your GATE score is decent but not enough for your target IIT, CCMT is where most of your realistic options will be. You should normally do both COAP and CCMT in the same year.

CCMT also uses Freeze, Float and Slide options, similar to JoSAA. If you have seen JoSAA counselling, you will find the logic familiar.

What is the eligibility for IIT M.Tech admission?

You generally need a B.Tech/BE, or an M.Sc or equivalent in a relevant subject, and a valid GATE score in the paper each department accepts. Many IITs also set minimum marks in the qualifying degree for general candidates, with a relaxation for SC/ST/PwD. The exact percentage or CGPA differs by IIT and department, so read each 2027 brochure.

• GATE validity: GATE scores are valid for three years. For 2027 admission, GATE 2025, 2026 and 2027 scores are usually accepted.
• Relevant paper: departments list which GATE papers they accept. For example, a data science programme may accept CS, DA, EC, MA and others.
• Final-year students: you can usually apply before your final result, but you must show proof of passing by the admission date.
• Non-GATE routes: some IITs allow IIT B.Tech graduates with high CGPA, sponsored candidates, or project staff to apply without GATE. These are limited seats with separate rules.

What GATE score do you need for IIT M.Tech?

There is no single cut-off. It depends on the IIT, the department, the specialisation, your category and the number of applicants that year. Top IITs in popular branches like computer science usually need very high GATE scores, while newer IITs and less crowded specialisations often close at lower scores.

We are not printing a score table here because official COAP cut-offs are released institute by institute, and many sites publish unverified numbers. Use each IIT's published "last round cut-off" documents from past years, if available, and apply to a mix of top, middle and newer IITs.

Remember: a GATE score makes you eligible for an offer, it does not guarantee one. Apply to enough programmes and keep CCMT as a parallel plan.

What documents do you need for IIT M.Tech admission?

Keep your GATE scorecard, Class 10 certificate for date of birth, B.Tech or equivalent marksheets for all semesters, degree or provisional certificate (or a final-year bonafide certificate), and category, EWS or PwD certificates in the format each IIT asks for. A clear photo and signature scan are also needed.

• GATE scorecard: for GATE 2025, 2026 or 2027, whichever you are using. Download old scorecards before the paid window closes.
• Marksheets: all semesters till the latest one, with CGPA-to-percentage conversion rules from your university if needed.
• OBC-NCL and EWS certificates: these must usually be valid for the admission year, so get fresh ones issued in time.
• No-objection certificate: if you are applying as a sponsored or working candidate.

What are the most common mistakes in IIT M.Tech applications?

The biggest mistakes are missing an IIT's deadline, applying to programmes that do not accept your GATE paper, and forgetting to log in to COAP during a round. Many students also use Accept and Freeze too early, and then cannot take a better offer that comes later.

• Read the "GATE papers accepted" column for every programme before paying the fee.
• Use the same GATE registration number everywhere; a mismatch can stop offers from showing on COAP.
• Set phone reminders for the opening and closing time of each COAP round, since windows are short.
• Do not ignore newer IITs; they often have good labs and less competition in specific branches.

How much is the IIT M.Tech stipend and fee?

Full-time M.Tech students at IITs admitted with a valid GATE score typically get an assistantship of Rs 12,400 per month, in return for about eight hours a week of teaching or research assistance. Sponsored and self-financed students usually do not get it. Tuition fees vary by IIT and category.

The stipend figure is listed, for example, on IIT Kanpur's department pages. It continues only if you keep satisfactory academic performance. Check the fee structure in each IIT's brochure, because semester fees and hostel charges are different at each campus.

Is M.Tech from IIT a good path after a low JEE rank?

Yes, for many students it is the best second chance. If your JEE rank placed you in a private or state college, a strong GATE score can still get you an IIT M.Tech seat. What matters is your GATE score, not your undergraduate college brand.
