Who can apply for IIT Delhi PhD in January 2027?

The official advertisement sets a minimum CGPA of 6.0 on a 10-point scale or 60% marks for General, OBC and EWS candidates, and 5.50 or 55% for SC, ST and PwD, over all years of the qualifying exam. Full-time PhD and MS(R) applicants also need a qualifying GATE or national exam, waived for some CFTI graduates.

The advertisement points to the Semester II brochure for detailed rules, and that brochure is now posted. The points below come from last round's brochure, so confirm each one in the new brochure:

  • Minimum marks: CGPA 6.0 or 60%; 5.50 or 55% for SC, ST and PwD (confirmed in the new advertisement).
  • GATE or national exam: required for full-time PhD and MS(R) (confirmed in the new advertisement).
  • GATE waiver: in the last brochure, for CFTI graduates or students (such as IITs and NITs) who entered through JEE and have CGPA 8.0 or more.
  • Part-time and sponsored: minimum full-time experience after the qualifying degree is given in the Semester II brochure.

Departments often shortlist above this minimum. For example, one academic unit's published criteria for Semester I 2025-26 asked B.Tech applicants in the General category for 70% marks and a GATE score of 500 or 600, depending on the degree. Check your target department's page once shortlisting criteria are posted.

How does IIT Delhi select PhD scholars?

Each department or centre sets shortlisting criteria, usually based on degree marks and GATE score, and then calls shortlisted candidates for a test, an interview or both. The Semester II 2026-27 brochure gives 9 to 16 December 2026 as the range for tests and interviews; your unit will tell you the exact date.

IIT Delhi's Computer Science department, for example, says shortlisted candidates face a test or interview on basics such as programming, data structures and algorithms, operating systems, networks and theory of computation. Other departments test their own core subjects. For interview preparation tips that apply across IITs, see our our general IIT PhD guide.
