PhD Admission January 2027: Last Dates at IITs, IISc, IISERs

For PhD admission January 2027, the first IIT deadline is IIT Bombay on 17 October 2026 (21 October with a late fine), followed by IIT Roorkee on 20 October, IIT Mandi's Chemical Sciences on 21 October, IISc on 26 October, IIT Guwahati on 28 October, IIT Delhi on 29 October and IIT Madras on 30 October 2026. IIT Kharagpur and IIT Jodhpur take PhD applications on a rolling basis.

What are the last dates for PhD admission January 2027?

Six IITs and IISc now have fixed, official last dates: IIT Bombay (17 October 2026, late fine till 21 October), IIT Roorkee (20 October), IIT Mandi (21 October to 4 November, by school), IISc (26 October), IIT Guwahati (28 October), IIT Delhi (29 October) and IIT Madras (30 October). IIT Kharagpur and IIT Jodhpur are rolling.

The table is sorted by last date. "Official" means we read the date on the institute's own notice or brochure. "Not announced" means the institute has not posted that detail yet.

IISER PhD January 2027 deadlines

Four IISERs have official January 2027 PhD calls with last dates. Each one runs its own form, so apply separately. Full details are on our IISER PhD admission January 2027 page.

IIT Bombay calls its schedule "tentative". IIT Delhi's 29 October date now appears in both its advertisement and its Semester II brochure. Recheck the official page on the day you pay. Aggregator sites often repeat last year's dates.

Which tracker leads were confirmed and which were not?

As of 11 October 2026, every fixed date in our tables matches the official pages, and no deadline has moved since 9 October. Two things are new: IIT Delhi's Semester II brochure is out, and IISER Pune has posted dates for its Science Education PhD.

• Confirmed: IIT Bombay 17 October (21 October with late fine); IIT Roorkee 20 October; IISc 6-26 October; IIT Guwahati 8-28 October (5 pm); IIT Delhi 9 October (12 noon) to 29 October (4 pm); IIT Madras 30 October, 5 pm; IIT Kharagpur rolling; IISER Bhopal 12 October; IISER Pune 18-23 October (by department); IISER Berhampur 24 October.
• New since 9 October: IIT Delhi Semester II brochure (tests and interviews 9-16 December 2026, orientation 31 December, classes from 1 January 2027); IISER Pune Science Education (12-25 October, written exam 2 November); IISER Berhampur Chemical Sciences walk-in advertisement (10 October).
• New between 7 and 9 October: IIT Delhi advertisement with last date and a 30 October - 1 November correction window; IIT Guwahati notification and department-wise selection schedule (24 November - 5 December); IIT Mandi School of Physical Sciences (7-30 October) and School of Computing and Electrical Engineering (8 October - 4 November); IIT Jodhpur's rolling PhD page with a 20 October cut-off for Semester II.
• Clarified: IIT Mandi "21 October" is for Chemical Sciences only. IIT Madras's portal has been open since 10 April 2026; it did not newly open this month.
• Not confirmed: a single "2-3 December" interview date for IIT Bombay; its departments set their own dates. IIT Jodhpur's 20 October cut-off could not be re-checked on 11 October because its site did not load for us.
• Not yet known: IIT Guwahati's seat matrix (still "To be updated shortly" on 11 October); IISER Kolkata's dates; any January 2027 round at IIT Kanpur, IIT Hyderabad or IISER Mohali.

Who is eligible for PhD admission January 2027 without GATE?

A valid GATE score or a UGC/CSIR NET-JRF is the normal route, but each institute has exemptions. IIT graduates with CGPA 8.0 or above are exempt at IIT Bombay, IIT Roorkee and IIT Kharagpur, and M.Tech holders usually do not need GATE. IISc insists on GATE or NET JRF for B.Tech holders.

If you are relying on GATE 2027 for a later round, note that the January 2027 intake uses scores that are valid now, such as GATE 2025 or GATE 2026. GATE 2027 regular registration closed on 5 October 2026 and the late-fee window runs till 12 October; the correction window is 14-21 October. How much fellowship do PhD scholars get in January 2027?

At IIT Bombay, IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur, the official brochures list institute assistantship of Rs 37,000 a month for the first two years and Rs 42,000 a month after that. IIT Bombay's research assistantship pays Rs 42,000 and Rs 47,000. JRF holders get their fellowship from UGC, CSIR or the funding agency.

"Concession" covers different groups at each place. At IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur it includes women candidates; at IIT Madras it includes female, SC, ST and PwD candidates; at IISc and IIT Roorkee it is for SC, ST and PwD.

Which PhD application should you submit first?

Apply in deadline order, not preference order. IISER Bhopal closes on 12 October and IISER Tirupati on 15 October. Then IIT Bombay (17 October), IIT Roorkee (20 October), IIT Mandi Chemical Sciences (21 October), IISc (26 October), IIT Guwahati (28 October), IIT Delhi (29 October) and IIT Madras (30 October).

1. Today (12 October): submit IISER Bhopal if it is on your list; it closes tonight at 11:59 pm. Register on IIT Guwahati and IIT Delhi, both open now.
2. By 15 October: finish IIT Bombay and IISER Tirupati. If your IIT Bombay department wants a 1,000-2,000 word research proposal, finish it first.
3. By 18 October: IIT Roorkee (pay separately for each department) and IISER Pune Biology. If IIT Jodhpur is on your list, apply before its 20 October Semester II cut-off.
4. By 21 October: IIT Mandi Chemical Sciences and IISER Pune Chemistry or ECS.
5. By 24 October: IISc (closes 26 October), IISER Berhampur and IISER Pune Science Education (closes 25 October).
6. By 27 October: IIT Guwahati (closes 28 October, 5 pm).
7. By 28 October: IIT Delhi (closes 29 October, 4 pm), IIT Madras and IIT Mandi CAIR or Physical Sciences (all 30 October). IIT Mandi Computing and Electrical Engineering closes on 4 November.
8. November-December: keep 16-20 November free for IISc interviews, 16-21 November for IIT Roorkee's tentative window, 24 November - 5 December for IIT Guwahati selections, and 9-16 December for IIT Delhi tests and interviews.

Several of these forms cannot be edited after submission. IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Mandi say this clearly. Check your department, specialisation order and category before you pay.

What should you do before the October deadlines?

The first IIT deadline (IIT Bombay) is five days away and the first IISER deadline is today. Confirm your eligibility route (GATE, NET, CGPA exemption or sponsored), pick two or three departments whose faculty match your interest, and keep proof ready for every claim in your form.

• Bookmark the official links in the tables above and check them twice a week.
• Final-year students must usually show the degree by a set date, such as 29 January 2027 at IIT Bombay and 31 March 2027 at IISc and IIT Madras.
• Keep money ready for multiple fees; Roorkee and Madras charge per department or programme, and IIT Mandi's CAIR per programme.
• Watch your email for shortlists: IIT Bombay plans to display its list on 30 October 2026, and IIT Mandi CAIR on 3 November (tentative).
• If you miss this round, plan for July 2027, when most IITs open around March-April. GATE 2027 regular registration closed on 5 October; the late-fee window runs till 12 October (see our GATE 2027 registration guide).

PhD admission January 2027 is a short, crowded season: most fixed deadlines fall between 12 October and 4 November 2026, and every major IIT round is now open. Apply in deadline order and keep your documents ready.

• IISER Bhopal: 12 October; IISER Tirupati: 15 October; IISER Pune: 18-25 October; IISER Berhampur: 24 October.
• IIT Bombay: submit by 17 October 2026 to avoid the late fine.
• IIT Roorkee: submit by 20 October 2026, 11:59 pm.
• IIT Mandi: Chemical Sciences by 21 October; CAIR and Physical Sciences by 30 October; Computing and Electrical Engineering by 4 November (5 pm).
• IISc: apply by 26 October 2026 (no BCD admission this round).
• IIT Madras: submit by 30 October 2026, 5 pm.
• IIT Guwahati: submit by 28 October 2026, 5 pm. IIT Delhi: submit by 29 October 2026, 4 pm.
• IIT Kharagpur: apply once through the rolling portal; duplicates are rejected.
