IIT JAM 2027 Exam Date, Registration, Result and 2026 Toppers

IIT JAM 2027 will be held on 14 February 2027, and IIT Kharagpur is the organising institute. Registration opened on 11 September 2026 on the JOAPS portal, and the result is scheduled for 18 March 2027.

This guide covers the JAM 2027 dates, fee, test papers and eligibility, then recaps the IIT JAM 2026 result and the official paper-wise toppers published by IIT Bombay. We also explain how admission works on JOAPS after the result.

When is IIT JAM 2027 exam date?

IIT JAM 2027 is on Sunday, 14 February 2027, in two sessions. The forenoon session (9:30 am to 12:30 pm) has Chemistry, Geology and Mathematics. The afternoon session (2:30 pm to 5:30 pm) has Biotechnology, Economics, Mathematical Statistics and Physics. You can take two papers only if they are in different sessions.

Heads-up: some news sites reported 12 October 2026 as the last date, while the official JAM 2027 home page shows 19 October 2026. Apply before 12 October to stay safe, and treat jam.iitkgp.ac.in as the final word.

A common two-paper combination is Mathematics with Mathematical Statistics, or Chemistry with Physics, since each pair falls in different sessions.

What is the IIT JAM 2027 exam pattern?

JAM is a three-hour computer-based test of 100 marks with 60 questions in three sections. Section A has multiple choice questions with one correct answer, Section B has multiple select questions, and Section C has numerical answer type questions. Negative marking applies only to Section A.

This pattern has been used in recent JAM cycles. Confirm it in the JAM 2027 information brochure, because the organising institute can revise the pattern or syllabus. Since Sections B and C have no negative marking, attempt every question there that you have worked out.

How to register for IIT JAM 2027?

You register for IIT JAM 2027 online on the JOAPS portal linked from jam.iitkgp.ac.in. Create an account, fill personal and academic details, upload your photo, signature and certificates, choose one or two papers and exam cities, and pay the fee online. There are no international exam centres this year.

1. Visit jam.iitkgp.ac.in and open the JOAPS link.
2. Register with a valid email ID and mobile number.
3. Fill in personal, category and academic details carefully.
4. Upload photograph, signature and, if applicable, category or PwD certificate.
5. Choose your test paper(s) and exam city preferences.
6. Pay the fee by debit card, credit card, net banking or UPI.
7. Download and save the submitted form.

What is the IIT JAM 2027 application fee?

The JAM 2027 fee is Rs 1,000 for one paper and Rs 1,350 for two papers if you are a female, SC, ST or PwD candidate. For all other candidates it is Rs 2,000 for one paper and Rs 2,700 for two papers. The fee is non-refundable, and JAM does not charge a separate processing fee.

If you later change your exam city, test paper, category, gender or date of birth, IIT Kharagpur charges Rs 300 plus any fee difference, as per the official fee page.

Who is eligible for IIT JAM 2027?

You can take JAM 2027 if you have completed your undergraduate degree, or if you will appear in the final exam of your qualifying degree in 2027. There is no minimum percentage to appear in the exam. For admission, you must finish your degree before joining and meet the admitting institute's rules.

Each admitting IIT publishes its own minimum educational qualification (MEQ), such as required subjects in your bachelor's degree and minimum marks. Qualifying JAM alone does not guarantee admission, a scholarship or a job. Read the MEQ of your target programmes before filling choices.

What happened in IIT JAM 2026? (Result recap)

IIT JAM 2026 was organised by IIT Bombay and held on 15 February 2026 for seven papers. The result was declared on 19 March 2026, one day ahead of the tentative date of 20 March. Scorecards were available from 27 March 2026. About 3,000 seats in 89 programmes across 22 IITs were offered through JAM 2026.

How do you check the IIT JAM 2026 result or scorecard?

Log in to the JOAPS portal of JAM 2026 (linked from jam2026.iitb.ac.in) with your enrollment ID or email and password. The result page shows your marks, All India Rank in each paper you took, and whether you qualified. If you qualified, you could download the scorecard from 27 March 2026.

"Qualified" in JAM means you are on the merit list for that paper. The number of candidates placed on the merit list depends on the number of seats in each category (GEN, OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST, PwD) for that subject. So being qualified makes you eligible to apply, but your rank decides which programme you actually get.

Who are the IIT JAM 2026 toppers?

JAM ranks are given paper by paper, so there is one AIR 1 in each of the seven papers and no single overall topper. IIT Bombay published an official "AIR TOP-10 Candidates" list on the JAM 2026 website. The AIR 1 to 3 holders in each paper, as per that official list, are below.

IIT Bombay did not publish topper marks alongside the names, so we do not print any marks here. Be careful with posts that name a single "overall AIR 1" for JAM; ranks are only paper-wise. Check the official page for the full top-10 list in each paper.

How does IIT JAM admission work after the result?

After the result, qualified candidates apply for admission on the JOAPS portal, fill choices of programmes and institutes, and receive offers in admission lists. For each offer you choose Accept and Freeze, Accept and Upgrade, or Reject and Quit. You pay a seat booking fee to confirm the seat.

• Accept and Freeze: you take the seat and leave further rounds.
• Accept and Upgrade: you keep the seat but can be moved to a higher choice in later rounds.
• Reject and Quit: you leave the admission process completely.

In 2026, the admission application fee on JOAPS was Rs 750 for all candidates. Withdrawal after paying the seat booking fee led to a refund after a processing fee of Rs 6,000, as per IIT Bombay's admission process page. Expect a similar structure for 2027, but check the JAM 2027 admission brochure.

Apart from IITs, several other institutes, such as IISc and some IISERs and NITs, use JAM scores for their own admissions through separate applications. These are listed as "result sharing institutes" on the JAM website.

How should you prepare for IIT JAM 2027 in the time left?

With the exam on 14 February 2027, you have roughly four and a half months. Spend the first three months finishing the syllabus with previous JAM questions, then shift to full-length timed tests and revision. Keep your final-year college exams in mind while you plan.

• October-November 2026: complete registration, collect the official syllabus and past papers, and finish your weakest units first.
• December 2026: complete the remaining syllabus and solve topic-wise previous-year questions.
• January 2027: take at least one full-length timed test every week and review every mistake.
• February 2027: revise formula sheets and short notes; avoid starting new books.

Accuracy in Section A matters because of negative marking. Numerical questions in Section C reward careful calculation, so practise with the on-screen virtual calculator instead of a physical one.

Is IIT JAM a good route if you missed IIT through JEE?

Yes. JAM is one of the cleanest ways to reach an IIT after a B.Sc, even if JEE did not work out. Many students who joined a state or private college after a low JEE rank later enter IIT M.Sc programmes through JAM. Your JAM paper-wise rank matters, not where you did your bachelor's.
