IIT summer internship 2027 applications will open between January and April 2027, and most programmes run for 6 to 8 weeks between mid-May and mid-July. The earliest deadline is usually the Science Academies SRFP (end of January), followed by IIT Jodhpur, IIT Madras, IIT Hyderabad, and then IIT Goa, IIT Dharwad and IISER Bhopal in March–April.

When do IIT summer internship 2027 applications open?

Official 2027 notices are not out yet. Going by the 2026 pattern, the first major deadline (SRFP) should fall around 31 January 2027, so its portal is likely to open in the winter of 2026. Most IIT schemes open between mid-January and March 2027, and the last ones close by mid-April 2027. Results normally come in March–April.

The table below shows the real 2026 windows. Treat them as your calendar for 2027, but confirm the new dates on each institute's website before you plan.

Tip: Put a reminder for 1 December 2026 and start checking the SRFP website from then. You will need a teacher's email ID for the recommendation letter. Recommendation letters received after the deadline are not accepted, which can leave your application incomplete.

What is SRFP by IAS-INSA-NASI and who can apply?

SRFP is the Summer Research Fellowship Programme run jointly by the Indian Academy of Sciences (IAS), INSA and NASI. Selected students work for about two months with a scientist at an IIT, IISc, IISER or national lab. It pays a monthly fellowship and round-trip train fare, and is one of the most competitive summer programmes in India.

The 2026 notice invited students and teachers from UGC, AICTE or MCI recognised institutions in India. The key steps were:

• Apply online through the academies' common portal by 31 January 2026.
• Give the email ID of one teacher, who uploads the Letter of Recommendation (LoR). The LoR deadline in 2026 was 13 February.
• Selection and guide's consent were sent around March–April, and the list of selected candidates started appearing on the website from the last week of April 2026, released in slots.

SRFP is open to science and engineering students, so B.Tech students can apply. Your statement of purpose matters. Write about one specific area (for example, materials, fluid mechanics or machine learning) and show that you have read a little about it. Vague "I love research" answers rarely work.

How does the IIT Madras summer internship work?

IIT Madras runs a Summer Fellowship Programme (SFP) for students of other institutes. In 2026, it paid Rs 15,000 per month for up to two months, ran from 18 May to 17 July 2026, and the last date to apply was 2 March 2026. Students already studying at any IIT were not eligible.

Eligibility in 2026 covered 3rd year students of BE/B.Tech/B.Sc (Engg) or a 3-year B.Sc, 3rd or 4th year students of integrated or dual-degree Master's programmes, and 1st year M.Sc, MA or MBA students with a strong academic record. Around 16 departments took fellows, including aerospace, chemical, computer science, data science and AI, mechanical and humanities.

You needed to upload:

• A passport-size photograph and Aadhaar card
• A bonafide letter from your college head
• One consolidated PDF of all mark sheets from Class 10 onwards
• Category certificate, if applicable

Hostel and mess were available on payment, subject to availability.

IIT Madras summer internship 2026 result: how was it announced?

IIT Madras did not put up one public merit list for SFP 2026. Shortlisted students were informed by email, generally in April. If you searched for "iit madras summer internship 2026 result" and found nothing, that is why. For 2027, use an email ID you check daily and add IIT Madras domains to your safe senders.

When was the IIT Hyderabad summer internship 2026 result declared?

IIT Hyderabad declared the SURE 2026 (Summer Undergraduate Research Exposure) results on 22 April 2026 on its news page, in five department-wise parts. Selected students had to confirm joining through a Google Form by 5 May 2026. IIT Hyderabad clearly said there would be no extension after that date.

The five result parts in 2026 were grouped like this: Part 1 (AI, Chemical, CSE, Engineering Science, Physics, Liberal Arts, Maths and others), Part 2 (Mechanical and Aerospace, Chemistry), Part 3 (Biotech, Design, Civil, Climate Change and others), Part 4 (Electrical, Biomedical and others) and Part 5 (Materials Science).

SURE is one of the few IIT programmes that takes 2nd year B.Tech students, so it is a good target if you are in your second year now.

What about IIT Goa, IIT Jodhpur and IIT Dharwad summer internships?

These newer IITs run smaller programmes with later deadlines, which makes them good backup options. IIT Goa paid Rs 5,000 per month under Track A in 2026, IIT Jodhpur ran its SURAJ programme with a February deadline, and IIT Dharwad took applications till 12 April 2026 with no application fee.

IIT Goa summer internship

IIT Goa offered two tracks in 2026. Track A had 23 positions with an institute stipend of Rs 5,000 per month for up to two months. Track B positions may or may not carry remuneration, depending on the project. You could apply to only one track and submit only one application.

The internship ran offline from 16 May to 10 July 2026, for a minimum of 6 weeks. It was open to non-IIT students in BA, B.Sc, B.Tech, dual degree, MA, M.Sc and MCA. M.Tech students were not eligible. Interns paid hostel and mess charges plus small one-time fees (Rs 500 for transport/ambulance and Rs 50 for ID card).

IIT Jodhpur summer internship (SURAJ)

IIT Jodhpur's programme is called SURAJ (Summer Undergraduate Research at Jodhpur) and started in summer 2025. In 2026, applications opened on 15 January and closed on 28 February 2026. Offer letters were sent to provisionally selected students by email. The internship lasts about two months, and the exact period is fixed with your faculty guide.

Eligibility reported for 2026 was B.Tech students after the 5th semester and M.Sc students after the 1st semester, with a CGPA of 7.0 or more. Check the SURAJ eligibility page again for 2027, as conditions can change.

IIT Dharwad summer internship

IIT Dharwad announced its 2026 programme on 30 March, closed applications on 12 April and declared results on 20 April 2026. The internship ran from 11 May to 10 July 2026, with one month as the recommended minimum and two months as the maximum. Applying was free.

Any enrolled UG or PG student in science, engineering, maths, humanities or allied streams from a recognised Indian institute could apply. You needed a resume, latest mark sheet, bonafide certificate signed and sealed by your principal, and a recent photo.

Does IISER Bhopal summer internship pay a stipend?

No. The IISER Bhopal summer internship 2026 clearly said no stipend or financial assistance would be given. Hostel cost about Rs 1,500 per month and mess around Rs 3,700 per month. Applications ran from 11 to 29 March 2026, and results came by late April.

Students in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of B.Sc, B.Tech, BS, BS-MS or BE, and 1st year M.Sc or M.Tech students could apply. You could pick up to three projects, and selection was based on your academics and a short project write-up. After finishing and submitting a report, you get a certificate from your faculty supervisor.

An unpaid internship at a good research institute can still be worth it, especially if you plan to go for IIT JAM 2027 or research later. Just budget around Rs 10,000–12,000 for two months of stay and food.

Which IIT internship should you target in your year of study?

Your year of study decides most of your options. Second-year B.Tech students should aim for IIT Hyderabad SURE, IISER Bhopal and IIT Dharwad. Third-year students have the widest choice, including IIT Madras SFP, SRFP and IIT Jodhpur SURAJ. Always match your branch with the professor's work.

How do you apply for an IIT summer internship step by step?

Start by listing 8 to 10 programmes and their 2026 deadlines. Then shortlist two or three professors per institute whose research matches your interest, write a specific statement of purpose, arrange a recommendation letter early, and submit well before the last date. Keep all documents ready as PDFs.

1. Make a deadline sheet. Use the table above and update it as 2027 notices come out.
2. Read faculty pages. Note two recent papers or projects of each professor you want to work with.
3. Write a one-page statement. Say what you have done (course project, coding work, lab work), what you want to learn, and why that lab.
4. Arrange your documents. Bonafide certificate, all mark sheets in one PDF, ID proof, photo, and category certificate if needed.
5. Request an LoR early. Give your teacher at least two weeks and a short summary of your work.
6. Check email daily in March–April. Many IITs send offers only by email, with short reply deadlines.

Warning: IIT internships are free to apply for or have small, clearly stated fees on official sites. Ignore agents or websites that promise a "guaranteed IIT internship" for money. Apply only through .ac.in portals or the academies' official website.

Is a summer internship at an IIT useful for GATE, M.Tech or PhD?

Yes. An IIT or IISER internship gives you a research recommendation letter, a real project for your CV and a clear idea of whether research suits you. These count strongly in M.Tech interviews, PhD shortlisting and foreign MS applications, though they do not replace your GATE score.
