IIT PhD admission 2027 happens in two sessions: a January 2027 intake, for which many IITs take applications between September and November 2026, and a July 2027 intake, for which applications usually open around March-April 2027. You normally need a master's degree or a strong B.Tech plus a valid GATE, NET-JRF or similar score.

When does IIT PhD admission 2027 happen?

Most IITs admit PhD scholars twice a year. The January (spring) session is filled through applications in roughly September to November of the previous year. The July (autumn) session is filled through applications in roughly March to May of the same year. Some IITs also run rolling or department-wise calls.

Right now (late September 2026), the January 2027 windows are open or about to open at several places. If you are aiming for July 2027, you have time to write GATE 2027 or UGC/CSIR NET first.

Dates for the January 2027 session are moving fast. Before you pay any fee, open the official IIT page and download the current brochure. Third-party sites often copy last year's dates.

What are the PhD admission sessions at each IIT?

The table below shows the usual pattern at major IITs, IISc and IISER Bhopal. The "typical application months" column is based on the 2025 and 2026 cycles and is only a guide. Individual departments can run extra calls, so always check the official site.

What is the eligibility for PhD admission in IIT?

You generally need a master's degree (M.Tech/ME, M.Sc, MA, MBA or equivalent) or a B.Tech/BE with a good academic record, plus a valid national-level qualification such as GATE, UGC/CSIR NET-JRF, JEST or INSPIRE. Minimum marks apply and are relaxed for SC/ST/PwD candidates.

As an example, IIT Bombay's PhD brochure for 2026-27 lists a minimum of 60% or 6.0 CGPA for general, EWS and OBC candidates, and 55% or 5.5 CGPA for SC, ST and PwD candidates, with additional conditions depending on the type of degree. Other IITs have similar but not identical rules.

• M.Tech/ME holders: usually eligible directly with minimum marks; GATE may not be required.
• B.Tech/BE holders: usually need a valid GATE score and a good CGPA.
• M.Sc holders: usually need GATE, UGC/CSIR NET-JRF, JEST (for physics) or INSPIRE.
• IIT B.Tech graduates: IIT Bombay, for example, exempts candidates with a bachelor's degree from an IIT (admitted through JEE) and CGPA 8.0 or above from the GATE requirement.
• Sponsored and external candidates: working professionals may apply under sponsored or part-time categories with work-experience conditions.

How is the PhD selection done at IITs?

Selection is done by each department. Applications are first shortlisted on the basis of academic record and GATE/NET score. Shortlisted candidates then face a written test, an interview, or both. Some departments hold these online, others on campus. Offers are released after the interview round.

Prepare a short research statement and know two or three faculty members whose work matches your interest. Interview panels often ask why you chose that area and what you studied in your master's project. You can usually apply to up to three disciplines or specialisations at IIT Bombay, and other IITs have similar limits.

What documents and profile do you need for an IIT PhD application?

Most IIT PhD applications ask for your degree marksheets and certificates, a valid GATE, NET-JRF or other qualifying scorecard, category or PwD certificates if applicable, a statement of purpose, and sometimes reference letters. Sponsored candidates also need a no-objection certificate from their employer.

• Statement of purpose: one page on your research interest, what you have already done (projects, thesis, internships) and why that department suits you.
• CV: list projects, publications if any, internships, technical skills and awards. Keep it to one or two pages.
• Qualifying score: check that your GATE or NET score is valid on the last date of application, not just on the interview date.
• Reference letters: some departments ask for names of referees; inform your professors in advance.

A strong master's or B.Tech project matters a lot in PhD interviews. If you are still studying, a research internship at an IIT, IISc or IISER can make your profile much stronger.

What are the common mistakes in PhD applications?

Students often apply to a department without checking whether faculty there work in their area, or they apply with an expired GATE score. Others miss that each department may run its own written test on a different date. Read the department-level notice, not only the institute brochure, before you apply.

• Do not apply for more disciplines than allowed; extra applications may be rejected.
• Check whether the department wants the application under Regular, Sponsored, External or Project category.
• Keep your email and phone active; interview call letters often come at short notice.

How much stipend do IIT PhD students get?

IIT PhD scholars on institute assistantship typically get Rs 37,000 per month for the first two years and Rs 42,000 per month for the next two years. JRF holders from UGC or CSIR receive their fellowship from the funding agency instead. Stipends depend on satisfactory progress each semester.

These figures are listed on IIT department pages (for example, IIT Kanpur's Mechanical Engineering financial assistance page). Some top IIT B.Tech graduates also apply for the Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF), which has its own higher fellowship and separate rules.

How does IISc Bangalore PhD admission work?

IISc admits PhD students mainly in August, with a smaller mid-year intake in January. For the January 2027 intake, applications are open from 6 to 26 October 2026 on admissions.iisc.ac.in, interviews are in mid-November 2026, and classes start on 1 January 2027.

IISc generally asks for a valid GATE score, NET-JRF or similar qualification depending on your degree. For B.E./B.Tech or 4-year B.S. holders, a valid GATE score or NET-JRF is typically mandatory. The main August-session notice for 2026-27 was published in February 2026, so expect the 2027-28 notice around the same time next year.

How does IISER Bhopal PhD admission work?

IISER Bhopal runs PhD admissions department by department through phdadmission.iiserb.ac.in. For 2026-27, Biological Sciences took applications until 13 April 2026, Chemistry extended its deadline to 22 April 2026, and other departments ran windows in June and July 2026.

Because each department sets its own dates and eligibility, follow the official IISER Bhopal portal and department social media accounts. Some IISERs also run January intakes. Typical requirements include a master's degree and a valid NET-JRF, GATE, INSPIRE or similar fellowship-qualifying score.

How does JNU PhD admission work now?

JNU no longer uses its own entrance test for PhD. For 2026-27, admission is through UGC/CSIR NET, JRF and GATE. For NET-based categories, the merit list uses 70% weightage for NET percentile and 30% for viva-voce. JRF candidates are selected on viva-voce, and GATE is used for the School of Engineering with 70:30 weightage.

JNU's 2026-27 e-Prospectus says only NET percentiles from the June 2025 NET cycle onward are considered. You can choose up to three fields of study in order of preference. If you are planning for JNU 2027-28, check whether the same NET-cycle rule is repeated, and write the December 2026 or June 2027 UGC/CSIR NET accordingly.

Should you choose PhD, M.Tech or a job?

Choose a PhD if you enjoy research, want an academic or R&D career, and are ready for a four to six year commitment. Choose M.Tech if you want to specialise and move into industry. Many students do M.Tech first, then decide on PhD. There is no single right order.
