60–70 Percentile in JEE Main: What the 2026 Data Says and What to Do

Key takeaways
- 60-70 percentile in JEE Main 2026 meant an approximate CRL of 4.62 lakh to 6.15 lakh, based on 15,38,468 unique candidates.
- In JoSAA 2026 Round 5, only 19 OPEN seat pools closed at or beyond 4.62 lakh, all on home-state quota at five institutes: NIT Mizoram, NIT Manipur, NIT Sikkim, Puducherry Technological University and GKCIET Malda.
- CSAB Special Round 2 in 2026 went deeper for some groups: ST candidates got IIIT Manipur CSE and ECE on All India quota at CRL around 4.6-5 lakh.
- For most OPEN candidates at this rank, state counselling, private universities (on JEE Main, Class 12 marks or their own tests) and other entrance exams are the realistic routes.
- JEE Main 2027 Session 1 is on 22-30 January 2027 (NTA, tentative); a focused plan can move many students up a band before Session 2.

A 60-70 percentile in JEE Main means a rank of roughly 4.6 to 6.2 lakh, and in 2026 almost every JoSAA seat for OPEN candidates had closed long before that. Seats did remain in a few home-state, category and CSAB pools, and a B.Tech is still very much possible through state counselling, private universities and other exams.
This guide is for students and parents who want the honest picture. We checked the official JoSAA 2026 final round and CSAB 2026 special round data, then laid out the routes that actually work at this rank, how to use JEE Main 2027 to improve, and how to think about a drop year. If you are weighing another attempt, our should you take a drop? our guide lays out the decision.
What rank is 60-70 percentile in JEE Main?
With 15,38,468 unique candidates in JEE Main 2026 (NTA), 70 percentile was roughly rank 4,61,500, 65 percentile about 5,38,500 and 60 percentile about 6,15,400. These are estimates. NTA does not publish an official percentile-to-rank table, and 2027 ranks will move with the number of candidates.
The formula is simple: rank ≈ (100 minus percentile) × total candidates ÷ 100. Your exact CRL is printed on your NTA scorecard, so always use that over any estimate.
| JEE Main percentile | Approx. CRL (2026 base) | OPEN seat pools in JoSAA 2026 Round 5 closing at or beyond this rank |
|---|---|---|
| 70 | 4,61,500 | 19 (all home-state quota) |
| 65 | 5,38,500 | 11 (all home-state quota) |
| 60 | 6,15,400 | 8 (all at NIT Mizoram, home-state quota) |
A "seat pool" is one programme in one gender pool (gender-neutral or female-only), OPEN category, as listed in the official JoSAA 2026 opening and closing ranks. PwD rows are left out of these counts.
If you scored a little higher, read our separate breakdown for students at 70-80 percentile. This article focuses on what is different once you cross 4.6 lakh.
What actually remained in JoSAA 2026 for a 4.6-6.2 lakh rank?
Very little, and only on home-state quota. In JoSAA 2026 Round 5, 19 OPEN seat pools closed at or beyond 4.62 lakh, at five institutes: NIT Mizoram, NIT Manipur, NIT Sikkim, Puducherry Technological University and GKCIET Malda. On All India or Other State quota, the deepest OPEN closing rank was 1,32,404.
So if you are an OPEN candidate from any other state, JoSAA had no realistic seat for you at this rank in 2026. That is hard to read, but knowing it early saves you weeks of waiting.
Here are the home-state pools that closed inside or beyond the 60-70 percentile band (JoSAA 2026 Round 5, OPEN):
| Institute and programme | Home state | Pool | Closing rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| NIT Mizoram, ECE | Mizoram | Female-only | 14,97,038 |
| NIT Mizoram, Chemical Science and Technology | Mizoram | Gender-neutral | 13,90,116 |
| NIT Mizoram, Electrical | Mizoram | Gender-neutral | 8,33,130 |
| NIT Mizoram, CSE | Mizoram | Gender-neutral / Female-only | 5,22,326 / 9,36,083 |
| Puducherry Technological University, Civil | Puducherry | Gender-neutral | 5,72,080 |
| NIT Manipur, Mechanical (5-year dual degree) | Manipur | Gender-neutral | 5,69,078 |
| NIT Sikkim, Mechanical | Sikkim | Female-only | 5,36,655 |
| NIT Sikkim, Civil | Sikkim | Female-only | 5,00,443 |
| GKCIET Malda, Food Technology | West Bengal | Gender-neutral | 4,95,529 |
| Puducherry Technological University, Mechatronics | Puducherry | Gender-neutral | 4,79,417 |
| NIT Manipur, Mechanical (4-year) | Manipur | Gender-neutral | 4,79,380 |
Home state for NITs is decided by where you passed Class 12, as per JoSAA rules. For female candidates, the female-only pools at NIT Mizoram and NIT Sikkim went much deeper than the gender-neutral ones. Female candidates are considered for both pools, so there is no downside to being eligible for both.
Reserved-category students should know one more thing: JoSAA judges OBC-NCL, EWS, SC and ST seats on your category rank, not your CRL. Your category rank may be far smaller than 4.6 lakh. Check your exact position in our JoSAA college predictor built on official 2026 closing ranks.

Did CSAB special rounds give seats beyond 4.6 lakh in 2026?
Yes, for some groups. CSAB 2026 Special Round 2 filled vacant NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats after JoSAA, and some went beyond 4.6 lakh CRL. These were mainly home-state seats in the North-East, Ladakh-quota seats, and category or PwD seats. OPEN Other State seats at NITs still closed far earlier, at about 1.5 lakh at most, though a few GFTI OPEN seats on All India or Other State quota went beyond 6 lakh. Our page on colleges for 50-60 percentile in JEE Main lists those deeper CSAB pools.
CSAB's official opening and closing rank page says all its ranks are All India CRL ranks, even for category seats. That makes them easy to compare with your scorecard. Some Special Round 2 examples:
| Institute and programme (CSAB 2026, Special Round 2) | Quota and category | Closing rank (CRL) |
|---|---|---|
| NIT Agartala, Chemistry (5-year dual) | Home state, OPEN | 9,37,609 |
| NIT Mizoram, Electrical | Home state, OPEN | 8,38,800 |
| NIT Manipur, Mechanical | Home state, OPEN | 6,17,875 |
| NIT Srinagar, Chemical | Ladakh (UT), OPEN | 5,31,447 |
| NIT Manipur, CSE | Home state, ST | 5,88,493 |
| NIT Nagaland, CSE | Home state, ST | 5,21,328 |
| IIIT Manipur, CSE | All India, ST | 4,66,101 |
| IIIT Manipur, ECE | All India, ST | 4,81,821 |
| ABV-IIITM Gwalior, Mathematics and Scientific Computing | All India, OPEN (PwD) | 5,69,415 |
Many CSAB rows reflect just one or two seats filled in that round, so treat them as signals, not targets. Also note that CSAB asks for a fresh registration and an enrolment fee. Our explainer on how CSAB special rounds fill vacant seats covers eligibility, fees and refunds.
If you are ST, SC, PwD or from a North-East state, Puducherry or Ladakh, register for both JoSAA and CSAB in 2027 even at a 5 lakh rank. For everyone else, register if you like, but lock a backup seat first.
Which state counselling options work at 60-70 percentile?
State counselling is the main route for most students at this rank. UPTAC, Bihar UGEAC, HSTES, REAP, MP DTE, JAC Delhi and Odisha counselling all use JEE Main scores. Government colleges fill early, but private colleges in these pools often have seats in later rounds. In some states, Class 12 marks also matter.
Where your board marks come into play:
- Rajasthan (REAP): merit uses JEE Main rank first, then Class 12 percentile, and candidates from other states can apply.
- Gujarat (ACPC): home-state merit uses Class 12 marks plus GUJCET; JEE Main is used for All India seats.
- Maharashtra (CAP): state seats use MHT CET; JEE Main counts only for All India seats.
- Later and vacant rounds: several states and many private colleges fill leftover seats with their own rules, which can include Class 12 marks. Read each 2027 brochure for the exact order.
Every state has its own domicile rules, registration fee and deadlines, and many run at the same time as JoSAA. Our state counselling guide for low JEE rank explains UPTAC, UGEAC, ACPC and the others in detail.
Which private universities admit through their own tests or Class 12 marks?
Many private universities do not depend only on JEE Main. Some accept JEE Main scores, some use their own entrance tests such as VITEEE, SRMJEEE, KIITEE or MET, and some admit on Class 12 marks. At 60-70 percentile, these are often the fastest way to secure a seat.
Before paying any fee, check these five things:
- AICTE approval for the programme, or UGC recognition for the university.
- The total fee for all four years, plus hostel and other charges, in writing.
- The refund policy if you later get a state or CSAB seat.
- Placement data with the number of students placed, not just the highest package.
- Whether the branch you want is actually taught on that campus.
See our list of private colleges that accept JEE Main scores, and apply to at least one separate entrance exam as a backup.

Can you improve your JEE Main percentile in 2027?
Yes. JEE Main 2027 Session 1 is on 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and 30 January 2027, as per NTA's calendar (tentative), and Session 2 is expected in April 2027. NTA uses the better of your two session scores. Many students at 60-70 percentile gain a band by fixing a few weak chapters.
Registration for JEE Main 2027 has not opened yet as of 23 September 2026. News reports expect it in late October 2026. Keep all dates in one place with our IIT and JEE exam dates 2027 tracker.
How a student at this level can realistically improve:
- Find the leak: compare your 2026 marks subject-wise. Most students at 60-70 percentile lose the most marks in one subject.
- Go chapter by chapter: pick the high-weight chapters you can finish, rather than touching every topic.
- Use Session 1 as a trial: write it seriously, then use the analysis to plan the weeks before Session 2.
- Take timed mocks: accuracy under time pressure matters more than extra theory.

Should you drop a year at 60-70 percentile?
There is no single right answer. A drop year can help if you know exactly what went wrong and your family can support it. It rarely helps if the reason is only disappointment. Many students instead join a college and still write JEE Main 2027, since you get three consecutive years to attempt it.
Ask yourself these questions honestly:
- Did your mock scores before the exam show you were close to a higher band, or were they also around 60-70 percentile?
- Did you finish the syllabus, or were large parts left?
- Can you study alone for 8-10 months without a routine or classmates?
- Is your family comfortable with the cost and the stress of another year?
- Would you be okay if the 2027 result is only slightly better?
| Option | Works best when | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Join a state or private college now | You like the branch and the fees are manageable | Picking a weak college in a hurry |
| Join a college and retry JEE Main 2027 | You want a safety net and can manage both | College workload leaves little time for JEE |
| Full drop year | Your gaps are clear and fixable, and family supports it | Pressure and isolation; small improvement |
| Non-JEE routes (IIT Madras BS, CUET, other exams) | You want a different path to a good degree | Ignoring eligibility and deadlines |
If you are already in college this year, remember that JEE Advanced has stricter attempt rules than JEE Main. Check both before planning a retry.
What mistakes should you avoid at 60-70 percentile?
The biggest mistakes at this rank are waiting only for JoSAA, paying agents for "guaranteed" seats, choosing a private college on advertisements alone, and missing state counselling deadlines. Each of these costs money or a year. A simple plan in May and June avoids almost all of them.
- Believing seat sellers: JoSAA and CSAB seats come only through the official portals. No one can sell you one.
- Ignoring category and PwD ranks: check every pool you qualify for before deciding.
- Paying twice without reading refunds: JoSAA, CSAB, state and private refund rules are all different.
- Comparing yourself with toppers: your plan should come from your own marks and mocks.
Final Word: your plan for 60-70 percentile in JEE Main
A 60-70 percentile in JEE Main puts JoSAA's OPEN All India seats out of reach on 2026 data, but home-state, ST, SC, PwD and CSAB pools still worked for some students, and state counselling and private universities remain open to almost everyone. Decide calmly and keep one backup ready.
- Note your CRL, category rank, PwD status and Class 12 state.
- Check real 2026 closing ranks for every pool you qualify for, not just OPEN.
- Register for state counselling in your state and one neighbouring state that allows outsiders.
- Shortlist two or three approved private universities and note their test and fee deadlines.
- Register for JoSAA and CSAB in 2027 if any pool fits you.
- Decide between joining, retrying or dropping using the questions above, and read our main guide to colleges for a low JEE Main rank before you finalise.
Frequently asked questions
What rank is 60-70 percentile in JEE Main?
Using the 15,38,468 unique candidates of JEE Main 2026, 70 percentile was roughly rank 4,61,500, 65 percentile about 5,38,500 and 60 percentile about 6,15,400. This is an estimate from a simple formula. NTA does not publish a percentile-to-rank table, and 2027 ranks will change with the number of candidates.
Can I get an NIT with 60-70 percentile in JEE Main?
Only in narrow cases. In JoSAA 2026 final round, OPEN seats beyond 4.6 lakh existed only on home-state quota at NIT Mizoram, NIT Manipur, NIT Sikkim, Puducherry Technological University and GKCIET Malda. CSAB special rounds also gave some home-state, ST, SC and PwD candidates seats at this depth. Most OPEN students should plan other routes.
Which colleges accept 65 percentile in JEE Main?
Mainly state counselling colleges and private universities. UPTAC, HSTES, REAP, MP DTE, Bihar UGEAC and Odisha counselling use JEE Main, and their private colleges often fill seats in later rounds. Many private universities admit on JEE Main, Class 12 marks or their own tests. Check approvals and total fees before paying.
Is 60 percentile in JEE Main enough for JEE Advanced?
No. In 2026, the JEE Advanced cutoff for the General category was 93.4123549 percentile, because only the top 2,50,000 candidates across categories qualify. Reserved-category cutoffs were lower, but still well above 60 percentile. You would need a much higher score in 2027 to write JEE Advanced.
Can I improve from 65 percentile to 90 percentile in JEE Main 2027?
It is possible, but it depends on why you scored 65 and how you use the months before January and April 2027. Students who fix weak chapters, practise full mocks and analyse mistakes often improve by a band. Set a realistic target using your mock scores, not stories of toppers.
Should I drop a year with 60-70 percentile?
Only if you know what went wrong, have a clear plan and your family can support it. Many students join a state or private college and still write JEE Main 2027, since you get three consecutive years. A drop year makes sense when your mocks already show steady improvement, not as an escape from disappointment.
Does CSAB help at 60-70 percentile?
It helps some groups. In CSAB 2026 Special Round 2, ST candidates got IIIT Manipur CSE on All India quota at a CRL of about 4.66 lakh, and home-state candidates at NIT Agartala, NIT Manipur and NIT Mizoram got seats beyond 5 lakh. For OPEN Other State candidates at NITs, CSAB closed far earlier, though a few GFTI OPEN seats went beyond 6 lakh.
