50–60 Percentile in JEE Main: Colleges, CSAB Data and Next Steps

Key takeaways

  • 50-60 percentile in JEE Main 2026 meant an approximate CRL of 6.15 lakh to 7.69 lakh, based on 15,38,468 unique candidates (NTA).
  • In JoSAA 2026 Round 5, no OPEN seat pool closed inside this band; five NIT Mizoram home-state pools had allotments that spanned it, and all eight NIT Mizoram home-state OPEN pools closed beyond 7.69 lakh.
  • CSAB 2026 Special Round 2 went deeper: 88 seat pools (non-PwD, non-DASA) closed inside 6.15-7.69 lakh CRL, including six GFTI OPEN seats on All India or Other State quota closing at or beyond 6.15 lakh.
  • ST candidates gain the most at this rank: 42 of the 88 CSAB pools closing in this band were ST seats, and the JEE Advanced 2026 ST cutoff (52.0174712 percentile) fell inside this band.
  • These are 2026 closing ranks, not 2027 cutoffs; use them only to judge which pools to register for in 2027.

A 50-60 percentile in JEE Main means an approximate rank of 6.15 to 7.69 lakh. In JoSAA 2026 no OPEN seat closed inside that range, but CSAB special rounds, home-state quotas, category seats and state counselling still gave students at this rank real options.

This page sits between our 40-50 and 60-70 percentile guides. We computed everything below from the official JoSAA 2026 Round 5 and CSAB 2026 Special Round 2 opening and closing ranks, so you can see exactly which pools reached this depth and plan your 2027 registrations from today, 7 October 2026.

What rank is 50-60 percentile in JEE Main?

Using the 15,38,468 unique candidates in JEE Main 2026 (NTA), 60 percentile was about rank 6,15,400, 55 percentile about 6,92,300 and 50 percentile about 7,69,200. These are estimates. Your real Common Rank List (CRL) rank is printed on your NTA scorecard, and 2027 ranks will move with the number of candidates.

The formula is: rank ≈ (100 minus percentile) × total candidates ÷ 100. At this level, one percentile point equals about 15,400 ranks. You can check your own figure with our JEE Main percentile to rank calculator.

A "seat pool" is one programme, one quota, one category and one gender pool (gender-neutral or female-only). We left out PwD rows, and for CSAB we also left out DASA rows meant for foreign and NRI candidates. CSAB's official page says all its ranks are All India CRL, even for category seats, so the CSAB column compares directly with your CRL.

Did any JoSAA 2026 seat close between 6.15 and 7.69 lakh?

No OPEN seat pool closed inside this band in JoSAA 2026 Round 5. The deepest OPEN closing ranks below 6.15 lakh stopped at 5,72,080 (Puducherry Technological University, Civil, home state), and the next ones above the band started at 7,72,883 (NIT Mizoram, Mathematics and Computing, home state). The band itself was a gap.

But a gap in closing ranks does not mean nobody in the band got a seat. Five NIT Mizoram home-state pools opened before 7.69 lakh and closed after 6.15 lakh, so students in this band were allotted there:

NIT Mizoram programme (home state, OPEN)PoolOpening rankClosing rank
Mechanical EngineeringGender-neutral3,55,9508,81,407
Electrical EngineeringGender-neutral3,74,8928,33,130
Computer Science and EngineeringFemale-only5,49,6349,36,083
Electronics and CommunicationGender-neutral6,48,06511,32,006
Mathematics and ComputingGender-neutral7,39,0597,72,883

Outside home-state quota, the deepest OPEN closing rank in the whole JoSAA non-IIT data was 4,59,421 (NIT Srinagar, Ladakh quota, female-only). On All India and Other State quota, the deepest OPEN seat closed at 1,32,404. So, for an OPEN candidate who did not pass Class 12 in Mizoram, JoSAA had nothing at this rank in 2026. Test your exact rank in the JoSAA college predictor built on official 2026 closing ranks.

How deep did CSAB 2026 special rounds go for 6-7.7 lakh ranks?

Much deeper than JoSAA. In CSAB 2026 Special Round 2, 88 non-PwD seat pools closed between 6.15 and 7.69 lakh CRL: 42 ST, 15 EWS, 13 OBC-NCL, 13 OPEN and 5 SC. Most were at GFTIs and central universities, with a few home-state NIT seats. These are vacant seats, so the numbers change every year.

The OPEN pools are the ones most students ask about. Here are the CSAB 2026 Special Round 2 OPEN pools that closed inside the band:

Institute and programmeQuota and poolClosing rank (CRL)
Assam University, Silchar: Agricultural EngineeringHome state, gender-neutral7,62,701
BIT Deoghar off-campus: CSE (Artificial Intelligence)Home state, gender-neutral7,57,334

NIT Agartala: Physics (5-year dual)Home state, gender-neutral6,86,784

IICT Bhadohi: Carpet and Textile TechnologyAll India, female-only6,21,254
NIT Manipur: MechanicalHome state, gender-neutral6,17,875

Many of these rows cover one or two seats, and several programmes are niche. Read the syllabus and placement record before treating any of them as a target. CSAB needs a fresh registration after JoSAA and an enrolment fee (Rs 40,000 for GEN, EWS and OBC-NCL, Rs 19,000 for SC, ST and PwD in 2026). Our guide to the CSAB special round 2027 and how vacant seats are filled covers fees, refunds and seat-cancellation rules.

These are 2026 closing ranks, not 2027 cutoffs. Vacant seats depend on how many students leave each year, so a pool that reached 7 lakh in 2026 may close at 3 lakh in 2027, or not appear at all.

How does your category help at 50-60 percentile?

A lot, especially for ST candidates. In JoSAA, category seats use your category rank, which is always far smaller than your CRL. In CSAB 2026 Special Round 2, which publishes CRL even for category seats, 42 ST pools and 33 EWS, OBC-NCL and SC pools closed inside this band, mostly on All India quota.

Examples from CSAB 2026 Special Round 2 inside the band include ST seats in CSE at Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidyalaya (6,83,158) and BIT Deoghar off-campus (6,56,332), an EWS seat in CSE (Data Science) at CSVTU Bhilai (6,99,961), and an OBC-NCL seat in ECE at IET, Dr. H. S. Gour University, Sagar (7,67,655).

For JoSAA, check your category rank against the 2026 closing ranks. NTA's 2026 result press release puts a ceiling on it: only 52,152 ST, 1,56,038 SC, 1,80,086 EWS and 6,11,953 OBC-NCL candidates appeared. JoSAA 2026 home-state ST seats closed as deep as category rank 48,423 (NIT Agartala, Chemical), and home-state SC seats as deep as 1,25,625 (NIT Arunachal Pradesh, Civil).

There is one more category point. The JEE Advanced 2026 cutoff for ST was 52.0174712 percentile, which falls inside this band, and the UR-PwBD cutoff was 0.0023186. So an ST or PwD candidate at 55 percentile could qualify for JEE Advanced in 2026. Read our JEE Advanced 2027 eligibility guide before you decide on 2027.

Do home state and gender change the picture?

Yes. At this rank, almost every reachable OPEN seat in 2026 was either home-state quota or female-only. If you passed Class 12 in Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura, Assam, West Bengal, Bihar or Jharkhand, some 2026 home-state pools at NITs or GFTIs in your state reached this depth in JoSAA or CSAB.

For NITs, home state means the state where you passed Class 12. For girls, the female-only (supernumerary) pool helps: in JoSAA 2026, female-only and gender-neutral closing ranks for the same OPEN programme differed by a median factor of about 1.27. You are considered in both pools, so there is no downside. Our page on female supernumerary seats explains how it works.

Also remember the board rule. NITs, IIITs and GFTIs need 75% in Class 12 (65% for SC, ST and PwD) or a top-20-percentile board score. Without it, none of the seats above can be confirmed.

What are your routes beyond JoSAA and CSAB?

For most OPEN students at 50-60 percentile, the main routes are state counselling, state CETs, approved private universities and a better JEE Main 2027 score. JoSAA and CSAB are worth registering for if you fit a home-state, female or category pool, but they should not be your only plan.

RouteHow it worksWhat to do now
JEE Main based state counselling (UPTAC, UGEAC, HSTES, REAP, MP DTE, Odisha)Uses JEE Main rank; private colleges often fill seats in later roundsNote domicile rules; REAP also admits outsiders
State CETs (MHT CET, KCET, WBJEE, KEAM, AP and TS EAPCET)Separate exam for state quota seatsWrite your home-state CET in 2027 as a parallel exam

The 2027 notifications for these exams are not out yet, so treat the table as the 2026 pattern. Our state counselling guide for a low JEE rank covers each state, and our list of private colleges that accept JEE Main scores helps with backups. If you want routes that do not depend on JEE Main at all, read engineering admission without JEE Main.

How can you move up a band in JEE Main 2027?

JEE Main 2027 Session 1 is on 22, 23, 24, 28, 29 and 30 January 2027, as announced in NTA's official calendar (tentative), and registration had not opened on 7 October 2026. Moving from 55 to 70-75 percentile is a realistic target for many students who use the next 15 weeks well.

  • Check coverage first: at 50-60 percentile, most students have large chapters untouched. List them honestly.
  • Pick high-weight chapters: finish a few fully rather than touching everything.
  • Use NTA's own practice: our guide to official JEE Main mock tests has a chapter-wise plan.
  • Mock every two weeks: track marks lost to concepts, calculation and silly errors.
  • Use Session 1 as a trial: NTA counts your better session score.

If a 60-70 percentile score looks within reach, compare with our guide for 60-70 percentile. If your score was slightly lower, our 40-50 percentile guide covers what changes below 7.7 lakh.

Final Word: your plan for 50-60 percentile in JEE Main

A 50-60 percentile in JEE Main puts JoSAA OPEN seats out of reach on 2026 data, except NIT Mizoram home-state pools. CSAB, home-state, female-only and category pools went further, and state routes stay open to everyone. Treat 2026 numbers as a guide to where to register, not as 2027 cutoffs.

  • Write down your CRL, category rank, PwD status and the state where you pass Class 12.
  • Check every pool you qualify for in the JoSAA and CSAB 2026 data, not just OPEN.
  • Plan to register for both JoSAA 2027 and CSAB 2027 if a home-state, female or category pool fits you.
  • Register for your home-state CET and one JEE Main based state counselling route.
  • Keep Class 12 marks above 75% (65% for SC, ST and PwD).
  • Start a 15-week JEE Main 2027 plan and read our main guide to colleges for a low JEE Main rank.

Frequently asked questions

What rank is 50-60 percentile in JEE Main?

With 15,38,468 unique candidates in JEE Main 2026, 60 percentile was roughly rank 6,15,400, 55 percentile about 6,92,300 and 50 percentile about 7,69,200. This is an estimate from (100 minus percentile) x candidates / 100. NTA does not publish a conversion table, so always use the CRL printed on your scorecard.

Can I get an NIT with 55 percentile in JEE Main?

Only in narrow cases. In JoSAA 2026 Round 5, the only OPEN NIT seats reachable at this rank were at NIT Mizoram on home-state quota. In CSAB 2026 Special Round 2, home-state OPEN seats at NIT Manipur and NIT Agartala also closed inside the band. OPEN Other State NIT seats closed far earlier.

Which colleges accept 50 percentile in JEE Main?

In CSAB 2026 Special Round 2, a few GFTIs filled All India OPEN seats near this rank, such as Islamic University of Science and Technology Kashmir (Electrical, 7,25,062) and Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidyalaya (Mechanical, 6,89,805). Beyond that, state counselling, state CETs and approved private universities are the main routes.

Is 55 percentile enough for JEE Advanced?

Only for some candidates, based on 2026. The ST cutoff was 52.0174712 percentile and the UR-PwBD cutoff was 0.0023186, so ST and PwD candidates in this band could qualify. The UR, EWS, OBC-NCL and SC cutoffs were all above 63 percentile. The 2027 cutoffs will be different.

Does CSAB help at 50-60 percentile?

Yes, more than JoSAA does. In CSAB 2026 Special Round 2, 88 non-PwD seat pools closed between 6.15 and 7.69 lakh CRL, mostly ST, EWS and OBC-NCL seats at GFTIs, plus some home-state and a few All India OPEN seats. CSAB needs a fresh registration and an enrolment fee.

Should girls at 50-60 percentile fill JoSAA choices?

If you passed Class 12 in Mizoram, yes: the NIT Mizoram CSE female-only home-state pool opened at 5,49,634 and closed at 9,36,083 in JoSAA 2026. In CSAB 2026, female-only OPEN seats at IICT Bhadohi, GKCIET Malda and BIT Patna off-campus also closed inside this band.
