70-80 Percentile in JEE Main: Which Colleges Are Realistic?

Key takeaways
- 70-80 percentile in JEE Main 2026 meant an approximate CRL of 3.08 lakh to 4.62 lakh, based on 15,38,468 candidates.
- In JoSAA 2026 Round 5, no OPEN seat on All India or Other State quota closed beyond about 1.32 lakh, so OPEN candidates at this rank have no OS/AI JoSAA option.
- 44 OPEN seat pools closed beyond 3.08 lakh in 2026, all on home-state or Ladakh quota at 7 institutes, including NIT Mizoram, NIT Manipur and Puducherry Technological University.
- Reserved-category candidates are judged on category rank, which can be much smaller than the CRL, so check category closing ranks before giving up on JoSAA.
- For most students at 70-80 percentile, state counselling, private colleges that accept JEE Main and other entrance exams are the realistic routes.

With 70-80 percentile in JEE Main, your rank is roughly 3.1 to 4.6 lakh, and JoSAA's OPEN All India and Other State seats closed well before that in 2026. But you still have real options: home-state quota in a few states, reserved-category and female-only seats, state counselling, private colleges and other entrance exams.
This guide is honest about the numbers and specific about where seats actually existed in the official JoSAA 2026 final-round data. It also covers the 80-90 percentile band briefly. A 70-80 percentile is not the end of your engineering plans; it just changes the route.
What rank is 70-80 percentile in JEE Main?
Based on 15,38,468 unique candidates in JEE Main 2026 (NTA), 80 percentile was roughly rank 3,07,700 and 70 percentile roughly 4,61,500. The middle, 75 percentile, was about 3,84,600. These are approximate conversions; NTA does not publish an official percentile-to-rank table, and 2027 numbers will shift with the candidate count. If your score is lower, read what 60–70 percentile students can still do.
The simple formula is rank ≈ (100 minus percentile) × total candidates ÷ 100. Here is what it gives on the 2026 base:
| JEE Main percentile | Approx. CRL (2026 base) | OPEN seat pools in JoSAA 2026 that closed at or beyond this rank |
|---|---|---|
| 90 | 1,53,800 | 103, all home-state, J&K or Ladakh quota |
| 85 | 2,30,800 | 74, all home-state or Ladakh quota |
| 80 | 3,07,700 | 44, all home-state or Ladakh quota |
| 75 | 3,84,600 | 27, all home-state or Ladakh quota |
| 70 | 4,61,500 | 19, all home-state quota |
A "seat pool" here means one programme in one gender pool (gender-neutral or female-only), OPEN category, from the JoSAA 2026 Round 5 opening and closing ranks. For a deeper explanation of the conversion, read our how percentile converts to rank, or try the percentile-to-rank calculator.
Can you get an NIT, IIIT or GFTI with 70-80 percentile through JoSAA?
On OPEN All India or Other State quota, no. In JoSAA 2026 Round 5, the deepest OPEN, gender-neutral closing rank on those quotas was 1,32,404 (Food Engineering and Technology at IET, Dr. H. S. Gour University, Sagar), and the deepest female-only was about 1,27,500. A 3-4.6 lakh rank is far beyond both.
We are saying this plainly because many students fill 100+ JoSAA choices at this rank and then wait for five rounds for a seat that the data says is very unlikely. Your time is better spent securing a good backup.
That said, JoSAA is not closed to everyone at this rank. Three groups still have a real chance: home-state candidates in a few states, reserved-category candidates, and, on home-state quota, female candidates. The next sections show exactly where.
Closing ranks change every year, and CSAB special rounds can go deeper than JoSAA. So do register for both if you are eligible, after reading the CSAB fee and refund rules. Just do not skip your backup admission while you wait.

Where did seats exist beyond 3 lakh rank in JoSAA 2026?
In JoSAA 2026 Round 5, 44 OPEN seat pools closed beyond rank 3,07,700 (80 percentile). All were on home-state quota, or Ladakh quota at NIT Srinagar, at seven institutes: NIT Mizoram, NIT Manipur, NIT Agartala, NIT Sikkim, NIT Srinagar, Puducherry Technological University and GKCIET Malda.
These are some of the deepest OPEN closing ranks from that list (home-state or Ladakh candidates only):
| Institute and programme | Quota | Gender-neutral | Female-only |
|---|---|---|---|
| NIT Mizoram, ECE | HS (Mizoram) | 11,32,006 | 14,97,038 |
| NIT Mizoram, CSE | HS (Mizoram) | 5,22,326 | 9,36,083 |
| NIT Mizoram, Mechanical | HS (Mizoram) | 8,81,407 | - |
| NIT Manipur, Mechanical | HS (Manipur) | 4,79,380 | 4,45,087 |
| NIT Manipur, Electrical | HS (Manipur) | 3,96,843 | 4,24,482 |
| NIT Sikkim, Civil | HS (Sikkim) | 3,21,378 | 5,00,443 |
| NIT Agartala, Production | HS (Tripura) | 3,57,078 | 4,10,216 |
| Puducherry Technological University, Civil | HS (Puducherry) | 5,72,080 | - |
| Puducherry Technological University, CSE | HS (Puducherry) | 3,09,655 | - |
| GKCIET Malda, Food Technology | HS (West Bengal) | 4,95,529 | - |
| NIT Srinagar, Metallurgical and Materials | LA (Ladakh) | 3,79,508 | - |
A dash means there was no separate female-only row for that pool in the Round 5 data. Home state for NITs is decided by where you passed Class 12, as per JoSAA rules. If you qualify for one of these states, put these programmes in your choice list without hesitation. To check every programme against your exact rank, category and state, use our JoSAA college predictor (2026 closing ranks).
Do reserved-category students have more JoSAA options at 70-80 percentile?
Yes, often. JoSAA compares OBC-NCL, EWS, SC and ST candidates on their category rank, which is usually much smaller than the CRL. In JoSAA 2026 Round 5, All India or Other State category seats closed as far as about 45,400 (OBC-NCL), 20,500 (EWS), 18,700 (SC) and 9,200 (ST) category rank.
So the question is not "what is my CRL?" but "what is my category rank?" Your NTA scorecard shows both. Compare your category rank with the category closing ranks on the official JoSAA page, not with the OPEN numbers.
Home-state category seats went much deeper in 2026. For example:
- NIT Manipur Mechanical (HS, OBC-NCL, gender-neutral) closed at 3,55,819 category rank.
- NIT Mizoram CSE (HS, OBC-NCL, female-only) closed at 5,39,090 category rank.
- NIT Agartala Biotechnology (HS, EWS) closed at 1,43,829 category rank.
- NIT Arunachal Pradesh Civil (HS, SC) closed at 1,25,625 category rank.
Keep a valid category certificate in the JoSAA-prescribed format ready. Without it, you are treated as OPEN.
Do girls get NIT seats at 70-80 percentile?
Only on home-state quota in a handful of states. In 2026, 14 of the 44 OPEN seat pools beyond 3.08 lakh were female-only pools, at NIT Mizoram, NIT Manipur, NIT Sikkim, NIT Agartala, NIT Srinagar (Ladakh quota) and GKCIET Malda. On All India or Other State quota, the female-only pool closed no deeper than about 1.27 lakh.
Female candidates are considered for both the gender-neutral and the female-only pools, so there is no downside to being eligible for both. Our article on female-only supernumerary seats in JoSAA explains how much lower a rank these seats accepted in 2026.

What are the realistic options outside JoSAA at 70-80 percentile?
For most OPEN-category students at 70-80 percentile, the realistic routes are state counselling, private universities that accept JEE Main, and other entrance exams. Many of these still offer CSE and IT. Pick based on approvals, fees you can afford and verified placement data, not on advertisements.
State counselling
Several states admit students using JEE Main ranks. UPTAC (Uttar Pradesh), Bihar UGEAC, HSTES (Haryana), REAP (Rajasthan), MP DTE, JAC Delhi, Odisha counselling and the All India seats in some other states are the common ones. Government colleges fill early, but many private colleges in these pools admit students with 3-5 lakh ranks or more in later rounds. Each state has its own domicile rules, so read the brochure. Our state counselling guide for low JEE rank covers the main ones.
Private colleges that accept JEE Main
Several private universities use JEE Main scores, 12th marks or their own tests. See our list of private universities that admit on JEE Main. Ask for fees for all four years, hostel costs and placement reports in writing before paying anything.
Other entrance exams
BITSAT, VITEEE, COMEDK, MHT CET and EAPCET are separate chances with separate ranking. Our guide to BITSAT, VITEEE and COMEDK 2027 has dates and registration details.
CSAB special rounds
CSAB fills NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats left vacant after JoSAA. You must register separately. It helps most for home-state and reserved-category candidates at this rank.
What about 80-90 percentile in JEE Main?
At 80-90 percentile (about 1.54-3.08 lakh rank in 2026), OPEN All India and Other State seats were still closed. But home-state options widened: 103 OPEN seat pools closed beyond 1.54 lakh at 13 institutes, including NIT Arunachal Pradesh, NIT Meghalaya, NIT Puducherry, Assam University and BIT Mesra's Deoghar campus.
Some 2026 home-state examples (OPEN, gender-neutral): NIT Manipur CSE 2,14,067, NIT Meghalaya Civil 2,30,791, NIT Arunachal Pradesh Civil 2,19,261, NIT Puducherry Civil 2,48,297 and NIT Sikkim ECE 1,95,559. The Ladakh quota at NIT Srinagar closed CSE at 2,02,569. For a sub-band breakdown (85-90 and 80-85) and the JEE Advanced angle, read our full guide to colleges at 80-90 percentile in JEE Main. Our pillar guide on colleges for low JEE Main rank has a band-by-band plan for 80-90 percentile, including state counselling.
What mistakes do students at 70-80 percentile make most often?
The most common mistakes are waiting only for JoSAA, missing state counselling deadlines, paying agents for "management seats", and choosing a private college on advertisements alone. Each of these costs either money or a full year. A little planning in June and July avoids almost all of them.
- Waiting for JoSAA Round 5 only: state counselling and private college deadlines often run at the same time as JoSAA rounds. Apply in parallel.
- Ignoring home state: if you passed Class 12 in a state with a deep home-state quota, those seats can be your best JoSAA chance.
- Not using the category rank: reserved-category students sometimes compare their CRL with OPEN closing ranks and give up too early.
- Paying twice without reading refund rules: check the seat acceptance and withdrawal rules of JoSAA, CSAB, state counselling and private colleges before you pay.
- Trusting "guaranteed seat" offers: JoSAA and CSAB seats are allotted only through the official portals. Nobody can sell you one.
If you plan to retry, note that JEE Main 2027 is expected to follow the same two-session pattern as 2026 (January and April), though NTA has to confirm the dates. Track them in our JEE Main 2027 exam date and registration guide. How much you can improve depends on your own gaps, so set a target based on honest mock-test scores, not on toppers' stories.
Should you take admission, drop, or do both?
There is no single right answer. Many students take admission in a state or private college and still write JEE Main 2027 to try for a better rank. Others take a planned drop year. Decide based on what went wrong, your family's situation and a clear study plan, not on fear.
A few questions to ask yourself honestly:
- Did you lose marks because of preparation gaps, or because of exam-day stress?
- Can your family support a drop year, emotionally and financially?
- Would you be happy in the college you can get now if the retry does not work out?
If you are unsure, keeping a seat while preparing is usually the safer path. Also look at the IIT Madras BS admission without JEE, which admits through its own qualifier rather than JEE rank.
Final Word: your plan for 70-80 percentile in JEE Main
A 70-80 percentile in JEE Main means JoSAA OPEN All India seats are out of reach on 2026 data, but home-state, reserved-category and female-only seats in some states, plus state counselling, private colleges and other exams, are all real options. Move fast on backups.
- Write down your CRL, category rank and home state (Class 12 state).
- Check your exact options in the JoSAA college predictor (2026 closing ranks).
- Register for JoSAA and CSAB if you are eligible, but do not depend on them alone.
- Apply to your state counselling and at least two private or other-exam backups.
- Verify AICTE or UGC approval and ask for placement data in writing.
- Decide on a JEE Main 2027 retry with a clear plan, ideally while holding a seat.
Frequently asked questions
What rank is 70-80 percentile in JEE Main?
Using the 15,38,468 unique candidates in JEE Main 2026, 80 percentile was roughly rank 3,07,700, 75 percentile about 3,84,600 and 70 percentile about 4,61,500. These are estimates from a simple formula; NTA does not publish an official percentile-to-rank table, and the 2027 numbers will depend on how many students appear.
Can I get an NIT with 75 percentile in JEE Main?
Only in special cases. In JoSAA 2026 final round, no OPEN Other State NIT seat closed near a 3.8 lakh rank. Home-state candidates of Mizoram, Manipur, Sikkim or Tripura, and Ladakh-quota candidates at NIT Srinagar, did get seats at that depth. Reserved-category candidates should check category closing ranks.
Which colleges accept 70 percentile in JEE Main?
Mainly state counselling colleges and private universities. Many state counselling bodies, such as UPTAC, Bihar UGEAC, HSTES and REAP, use JEE Main ranks, and their private colleges often admit students at this level. Several private universities also accept JEE Main scores or their own tests. Always verify approvals and fees.
Is 80 percentile in JEE Main good?
It means you scored better than about 80 percent of candidates in your shift, which is a real achievement in a very competitive exam. For JoSAA, though, 80 percentile (about 3 lakh rank) is below where OPEN All India seats closed in 2026. State counselling and private colleges are the practical routes.
Can girls get NIT with 70-80 percentile?
Only on home-state quota in a few small states. In JoSAA 2026, the female-only pool at NIT Mizoram closed ECE at 14,97,038 and Electrical at 10,62,087 for Mizoram candidates. On Other State or All India quota, the deepest OPEN female-only closing rank was about 1.27 lakh.
Should I drop a year if I get 70-80 percentile?
It depends on your reasons, your family situation and whether you know what went wrong. Many students take admission and still write JEE Main 2027 for a better rank. Others take a planned drop. Make the choice based on your preparation plan, not panic, and keep a backup admission if possible.
