Low Score in JEE Advanced? Options That Are Still Open

Key takeaways

  • A low JEE Advanced score does not affect your JEE Main rank: NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats in JoSAA are allotted on JEE Main CRL or category rank.
  • In JoSAA 2026 Round 5, 557 NIT/IIIT/GFTI programmes were still open at a 20,000 JEE Main rank and 45 at 1 lakh (OPEN, gender-neutral, OS/AI quota).
  • At IITs, the deepest OPEN gender-neutral closing rank outside B.Arch was 18,977 (IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, 5-year Chemical Science); female-only pools went to about 29,800.
  • IISERs no longer admit through JEE Advanced: in 2026 the IISER Aptitude Test was the single admission channel.
  • JEE Advanced qualified candidates can join the IIT Madras BS Foundation level directly without the qualifier, according to the official admissions page.

A low score in JEE Advanced does not undo your JEE Main rank. You can still take NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats through JoSAA on that rank, add IIT programmes that close deeper, such as BS and integrated M.Sc courses, and look at routes like the IIT Madras BS degree.

This guide uses official JoSAA 2026 Round 5 data to show what was actually available, explains the IISER position correctly, and helps you think calmly about whether to drop. A modest Advanced score is common: of the 1,79,694 candidates who appeared in both papers of JEE Advanced 2026, 56,880 qualified, according to the official result press release.

What happens to your JoSAA options after a low score in JEE Advanced?

JoSAA uses two separate ranks. IIT seats use your JEE Advanced rank; NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats use your JEE Main CRL or category rank. So a weak Advanced paper only narrows your IIT choices. Your NIT, IIIT and GFTI chances are exactly what your JEE Main rank allows.

You fill one choice list in JoSAA, with IIT and non-IIT programmes together in your order of preference. So there is no reason to skip IITs entirely, and no reason to rely on them alone. If you qualified but did not get an Advanced rank in the CRL, you can still fill non-IIT choices using your JEE Main rank.

This table shows how many NIT, IIIT and GFTI programmes were still open at different JEE Main ranks in JoSAA 2026, Round 5 (OPEN, gender-neutral, Other State or All India quota):

Which IIT programmes closed at deeper ranks in JoSAA 2026?

In JoSAA 2026 Round 5, the deepest OPEN gender-neutral IIT closing ranks outside B.Arch were around 17,000-19,000. They were mostly BS and integrated M.Sc science programmes, materials and civil branches at newer IITs, and some IIT Patna civil dual degrees.

IIT and programmeClosing rank (OPEN, gender-neutral, JoSAA 2026 Round 5)
IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, Chemical Science (5-year Int. BS-MS)18,977
IIT Mandi, BS in Chemical Sciences18,835
IIT Jodhpur, BS Engineering Chemistry18,643
IIT Jammu, Materials and Metallurgical Engineering18,637
IIT Palakkad, Materials Engineering18,397
IIT Dharwad, BS Major in Physics18,223
IIT Patna, B.Tech Civil + M.Tech Geotechnical17,820
IIT Dharwad, BS Major in Mathematics17,372
IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, Physical Science (5-year Int. BS-MS)17,355
IIT Kharagpur, BS Applied Geology15,872
IIT Patna, BS Economics14,550
IIT Madras, BS Biological Science12,204

B.Arch programmes closed deeper (up to 28,480 at IIT (BHU) Varanasi), but they need you to clear the Architecture Aptitude Test, so they are not a general fallback. In total, 50 OPEN gender-neutral IIT seat pools (excluding B.Arch) closed beyond 15,000 in 2026.

These are 2026 numbers for one round and one pool. Ranks move every year. Female-only pools closed up to about 29,800 (IIT Jammu Civil), and category seats are judged on category rank, for example OBC-NCL up to about 6,370 and SC up to about 3,390 for BS science programmes. Check your exact pool.

Also check the category and gender pool you are actually eligible for. A girl with a modest rank, for example, is considered in both the gender-neutral and the female-only pool, and the female-only pools closed roughly 10,000 ranks deeper at several newer IITs in 2026. Reserved-category candidates should compare only their category rank with category closing ranks. Our JoSAA counselling guide explains how one list covers all of these pools.

Before you lock in a BS or integrated science programme only for the IIT tag, read its curriculum. These are good degrees for students who like science, research or economics, but they are not B.Tech CSE in disguise. For IIT-level detail, see the closing ranks at IIT Patna and IIT Jodhpur closing ranks.

Can you still get into an IISER with a JEE Advanced rank?

No, not in the current system. The official IISER Admissions 2026 site says there is a single admission channel: the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT). The JEE Advanced channel that existed earlier is not offered. IAT 2026 was held on Sunday, 7 June 2026, and admission offers ran in rounds from late July to September.

The good news is that IAT is open to students who passed Class 12 in the last two years as well as current Class 12 students. For 2026, those who passed in 2024 or 2025 or were appearing in 2026 could apply, with at least 60% aggregate in Class 12 (55% for SC, ST and PwD). If the same pattern holds, students who passed in 2026 should be able to write IAT 2027, but wait for the 2027 notice to confirm.

IISERs offer 5-year BS-MS programmes, and some also offer 4-year BS and B.Tech programmes, for example at IISER Bhopal and IISER Tirupati. If research science interests you, IAT is a serious option, and you prepare for it alongside JEE-level Physics, Chemistry and Maths.

What about the IIT Madras BS degree?

It is a real option. The official IIT Madras BS admissions page says candidates eligible for the most recent JEE Advanced can join the Foundation level directly after verification, skipping the four-week qualifier. Everyone else enters through the qualifier process and exam.

The programme is offered in Data Science and Applications and in Electronic Systems. It is largely online, with in-person exams, so many students do it alongside another degree. Check fees, the term calendar and the current deadline on the official site; our IIT Madras BS degree admission guide explains the qualifier, fees and JEE entry in detail.

Should you drop a year after a low JEE Advanced score?

Only if you are eligible for another attempt, understand clearly what went wrong, and have family support for a full year. JEE Advanced allows a maximum of two attempts in two consecutive years, and you must first clear the JEE Main 2027 cutoff again. Many students instead join a good NIT, IIIT or GFTI and do very well.

Compare the two paths honestly:

QuestionLean towards taking the seatLean towards a planned drop
Attempts leftThis was your second attemptThis was your first attempt
Gap between mocks and paperMocks were at the same levelMocks were clearly higher; one bad day
Seat in handA programme you would genuinely likeOnly seats you would not want to study
SupportFamily stretched financially or emotionallyFamily can support a full year

If you do drop, plan the year properly. Our JEE Main 2027 dropper plan covers the decision and a realistic schedule. JEE Main 2027 Session 1 dates have been announced in NTA's official calendar (tentative), and registration is not open yet; confirm the schedule on jeemain.nta.nic.in.

What other routes keep an IIT or top-institute goal alive?

A B.Tech or B.Sc from a good NIT, IIIT, GFTI or state college does not close the door to IITs. Many students reach IITs later for M.Tech through GATE, for M.Sc through IIT JAM, or for PhD programmes. These routes reward steady work in college rather than one exam day at 17.

  • GATE: after B.Tech, for M.Tech, MS and PhD at IITs and PSU jobs.
  • IIT JAM: after a B.Sc, for M.Sc and related programmes at IITs.
  • NEST: the separate entrance for NISER Bhubaneswar and UM-DAE CEBS Mumbai integrated M.Sc programmes, held in June in 2026.
  • State counselling and private colleges: useful if your JEE Main rank is also modest; see our state counselling guide.

Final Word: what to do after a low score in JEE Advanced

A low score in JEE Advanced is disappointing, but it is one exam. Your JEE Main rank still opens NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats, some IIT programmes close deeper than people expect, and routes like IAT and the IIT Madras BS degree exist. Make decisions from data, not from comparison with toppers.

  • Write down your JEE Advanced rank, JEE Main CRL, category rank and home state.
  • Build one JoSAA list mixing deep-closing IIT programmes you would truly enjoy with NIT, IIIT and GFTI choices.
  • Read the curriculum of any BS or integrated programme before putting it high on your list.
  • If research science interests you, track IAT 2027 on the official IISER admissions site.
  • Decide on a drop only after checking attempts left, your mock record and family support.
  • Keep a backup seat while you decide.

Frequently asked questions

What if I score low in JEE Advanced?

Your JEE Main rank is not affected, so you can still get NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats through JoSAA on that rank. In the same JoSAA list you can add IIT programmes that close deeper, such as BS, integrated M.Sc and some dual degrees. Other routes include state counselling, private colleges and the IIT Madras BS degree.

What is the lowest JEE Advanced rank that got an IIT seat in 2026?

In JoSAA 2026 Round 5, the deepest OPEN gender-neutral IIT closing rank outside B.Arch was 18,977, for IIT (ISM) Dhanbad's 5-year Chemical Science. Female-only pools closed up to about 29,800, and category ranks and preparatory-course seats follow separate lists. These are 2026 numbers and will change.

Can I get into IISER with JEE Advanced rank?

Not in the current system. The official IISER Admissions 2026 site says there is a single admission channel, the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT). The JEE Advanced channel used in earlier years is no longer offered. IAT 2026 was held on 7 June 2026.

Can I join IIT Madras BS after JEE Advanced?

Yes. The official IIT Madras BS admissions page says candidates eligible for the most recent JEE Advanced can join the Foundation level directly after verification, without the four-week qualifier. You pay an admission fee and course fees. Check the current term's deadline on study.iitm.ac.in.

Should I drop a year after a low JEE Advanced score?

Only if you are eligible for one more JEE Advanced attempt, know clearly what went wrong, and your family can support the year. JEE Advanced allows two attempts in consecutive years. Many students instead take a good NIT, IIIT or GFTI seat and later aim for IITs through GATE or JAM.

Do IIT dual degree programmes close at lower ranks?

Some do. In JoSAA 2026 Round 5, several IIT Patna B.Tech plus M.Tech civil programmes closed around 17,000-18,000 (OPEN, gender-neutral), close to the deepest IIT seats. Others, such as CSE dual degrees, closed much earlier. Always compare the exact programme, not the label.
