Yes, you can study at IIT Madras without JEE through the IIT Madras BS degree in Data Science and Applications or in Electronic Systems. You only need to have passed Class 12, then clear a 4-week online qualifier process and an in-person qualifier exam.

What is the IIT Madras BS degree?

The IIT Madras BS degree is an online-first undergraduate programme where lectures and assignments are online, and exams are held in person at test centres. Two BS programmes are offered: Data Science and Applications, and Electronic Systems. Admission is through a qualifier process, not JEE.

The programme is flexible. You can leave after each level with a valid credential and come back later. IIT Madras says more than 36,000 students are currently studying the Data Science programme, and over 20,000 of them are doing it along with another degree.

The exit levels for Data Science are:

• Foundation (32 credits) – Foundation certificate
• Diploma in Programming and/or Data Science (27 credits each)
• BSc degree (114 credits in total)
• BS degree (142 credits in total)

Electronic Systems follows a similar structure of Foundation, Diploma and BS degree, also totalling 142 credits, with lab work at home using kits and lab exams on the IIT Madras campus.

Can you really get into an IIT without JEE?

Yes, but only into these BS programmes, not into the regular on-campus B.Tech. The on-campus B.Tech at IIT Madras still needs a JEE Advanced rank and JoSAA counselling. The BS degree is awarded by IIT Madras and is taught by its faculty, but most learning happens online.

This difference matters. If you want the full campus experience, hostels, clubs and campus placements that come with a B.Tech, you still need JEE. Who is eligible for the IIT Madras BS degree?

Anyone who has passed Class 12 or equivalent can apply, irrespective of age or academic background. For Data Science, you should have studied Maths and English in Class 10. For Electronic Systems, you need Physics and Maths in Class 12. Class 11 students who have finished their final exams can also apply.

There is no minimum percentage in Class 12. This is why the BS degree is popular with students who missed JoSAA's 75% board criterion.

How does the IIT Madras qualifier process work?

The qualifier process is 4 weeks of online coursework with video lectures and weekly assignments. You must clear an assignment cutoff to become eligible for the qualifier exam, which is a 4-hour in-person test. If you pass the exam, you are admitted to the Foundation level.

For Data Science, the four qualifier courses are English I, Mathematics for Data Science I, Statistics for Data Science I and Computational Thinking. For Electronic Systems, they are English I, Maths for Electronics I, Electronic Systems Thinking and Circuits, and Introduction to C Programming.

Qualifier cutoffs by category

The Data Science portal lists these cutoffs; the Electronic Systems portal uses the same exam thresholds. There is no fixed number of seats. Everyone who clears the cutoffs gets in, so you are competing against the syllabus, not against other students.

The qualifier is not a formality. Maths and statistics can feel tough if you have been away from studies. Watch every lecture, do all the practice questions and solve old assignments before the exam.

What is the IIT Madras BS degree fee?

For Data Science, the Foundation level costs about Rs 48,000 and the full BS degree about Rs 3.86 lakh to Rs 4.5 lakh, as per the structure revised from January 2026. The Electronic Systems programme lists a total of about Rs 5.8 lakh without waivers. You pay only for courses you register for each term.

For Electronic Systems, the official page lists the Foundation level at Rs 82,000, the Diploma level at Rs 1,62,000 and the BS degree level at Rs 3,36,000, for a total of Rs 5,80,000 before waivers. Fees can be revised, so check the academics page before you pay.

Application fee and fee waivers

• Application fee: Rs 4,000 (General/OBC), Rs 2,000 (SC/ST or PwD with 40% or more disability), Rs 1,000 (SC/ST and PwD). Re-attempt fees are lower.
• Waivers: For Data Science, General and OBC-NCL students with family income between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 5 lakh get 50%. EWS students with income below Rs 5 lakh get 75%. SC/ST and PwD students get 50% even above Rs 5 lakh income and 75% below Rs 1 lakh.
• Important: Waivers apply to the Diploma and degree levels, not the Foundation level.

Can JEE Advanced candidates join the IIT Madras BS degree directly?

Yes. Candidates who qualified to appear for JEE Advanced can skip the qualifier and join the Foundation level directly. You still submit an application, get your proof verified and pay the course registration fee. The eligible JEE Advanced years are listed on each programme's admissions page.

This is useful if you cleared JEE Main well enough to sit for JEE Advanced but did not get the branch or IIT you wanted in JoSAA counselling. You can take a seat elsewhere and still start the BS degree without the qualifier.

What are the IIT Madras BS degree admission dates?

IIT Madras admits students in several terms a year. For the September 2026 batch, the official last date to apply is 27 September 2026. Careers360 reports the first qualifier exam for this batch on 15 November 2026, with results on 19 November 2026. Dates for the next intake will appear on study.iitm.ac.in.

If you miss this window, apply for the next term. There is no disadvantage in joining a later batch.

Is the NIOS route useful for JEE eligibility?

Only in limited cases. NIOS Senior Secondary with at least five subjects is accepted by JoSAA as a Class 12 equivalent. But JoSAA 2026 rules say an improvement marksheet must be issued by the same board, and marksheets from separate boards are not permitted. So a CBSE or state board student cannot use a NIOS improvement to reach 75%.

Here is what the JoSAA 2026 business rules actually say about Class 12 performance for IITs and the NIT+ system:

• You must have passed Class 12 with at least five subjects and scored 75% aggregate (65% for SC, ST and PwD), or be in the category-wise top 20 percentile of your board.
• You can improve in one or more subjects to reach 75%, or reappear in all subjects to be in the top 20 percentile of that year.
• If you appeared for the first time in 2025 and reappeared in all subjects in 2026, the better of the two results is considered.
• In all cases, the marksheet must come from the same examination board.

So when does NIOS help? It helps if you are already a NIOS learner and want to improve through NIOS itself, or if you left school without completing Class 12 and want to finish it. Warning: Before spending a year on any improvement plan, write to the JoSAA or JEE Advanced helpdesk with your exact case (board, year of first appearance, subjects). Coaching centres and forums often give outdated advice on NIOS and improvement exams.

Who should choose the IIT Madras BS degree?

It suits self-driven students who want IIT-level coursework in data science or electronics, can study online without daily supervision, and can travel to exam centres. It is a strong add-on to a regular degree. It is weaker for students who need campus life, structured classes or campus placements to stay on track.

• Good fit: students with a low JEE rank, droppers who do not want another year of JEE, working professionals, and B.Sc or B.Com students who want tech skills.
• Think twice: if you struggle with self-study, if you do not have a reliable laptop and internet, or if a regular campus B.Tech is within reach.
