GATE 2027 Preparation Plan: 16 Weeks to 6 Feb, With Revision Notes

Key takeaways

  • GATE 2027 starts on 6 February 2027 (official, gate2027.iitm.ac.in); from 12 October 2026 you have 16 full weeks plus a short taper week.
  • Split the 16 weeks into three phases: finish and fix weak subjects (weeks 1-6), revise with past papers (weeks 7-12), full mocks and short notes only (weeks 13-16).
  • The official GATE 2027 download page offers past question papers with answer keys for 2021-2026 and a bulk folder from 2007 to 2026.
  • The paper-wise schedule is not out yet, so plan to be ready by 6 February even if your paper falls later.
  • There is no official topic weightage; build your own from past papers of your paper code and the revised 2027 syllabus PDF.

A good GATE 2027 preparation plan now is a 16-week revision plan: from Monday 12 October 2026 to Sunday 31 January 2027, followed by a light taper week before the first exam day on 6 February 2027. Spend the first six weeks fixing weak subjects, the next six on past papers, and the last four on full mocks and short notes.

This guide gives you the week-by-week schedule, a simple way to make revision notes, a weekly rhythm for mocks using official GATE past papers, and short notes for CS, DA, EC, EE, ME and CE. All dates were checked on gate2027.iitm.ac.in on 9 October 2026.

How much time is left for GATE 2027?

From 9 October 2026, there are 120 days to 6 February 2027, the first GATE 2027 exam day. If you start on Monday 12 October, you get 16 full weeks plus five days to taper. Your own paper may be later in February, but the paper-wise schedule is not out, so plan for 6 February.

What does the 16-week GATE 2027 preparation plan look like?

The plan has three phases. Weeks 1 to 6 (12 October to 22 November) close gaps in weak subjects. Weeks 7 to 12 (23 November to 3 January) are past-paper revision, subject by subject. Weeks 13 to 16 (4 to 31 January) are full-length timed papers and short-note revision only. 1 to 5 February is a light taper.

WeeksDatesMain goalPractice each week
1-212 Oct - 25 Oct 2026Audit: read the 2027 syllabus PDF, take one full past paper cold, list weak subjects1 full past paper; 2 topic sets
3-626 Oct - 22 Nov 2026Finish or repair 2-3 weak subjects; daily General Aptitude and Engineering MathsTopic-wise past questions after each chapter; 1 full paper every 2 weeks
7-923 Nov - 13 Dec 2026First full revision of all subjects using your notesSubject-wise past questions (last 10 years); 1 full paper a week
10-1214 Dec 2026 - 3 Jan 2027Second revision, faster; rewrite notes into one-page summaries1-2 full papers a week; error-log review every Sunday
13-144 Jan - 17 Jan 2027Exam simulation; check exam city (4 Jan)2 full timed papers a week in your exam slot time
15-1618 Jan - 31 Jan 2027Only short notes, formula sheets and error log; no new topics2 full timed papers a week; recent-year papers last
Taper1 Feb - 5 Feb 2027Light revision, sleep, admit card and travel checksOne short sectional set a day at most

If your paper turns out to be on 13, 14, 20 or 21 February, keep the plan and add an extra phase of timed papers after week 16. Do not reopen new topics in that extra time.

Read the 2027 syllabus PDF for your paper before week 1 ends. IIT Madras has revised the syllabi of the test papers, so a coaching schedule built on the 2026 syllabus may miss or include topics. Our GATE 2027 syllabus changes and paper codes guide links every official PDF.

How should you make revision notes for GATE?

Make short, personal notes while you revise, not long copies of textbooks. For each subject, keep one formula sheet, one page of concepts you keep forgetting, and an error log of questions you got wrong. In the last four weeks, you should revise only from these pages.

A simple three-layer system works for most students:

  1. Formula sheet (1-2 pages per subject): formulas, standard results and units. Write them by hand once; it helps memory.
  2. Concept page: definitions, conditions and traps, for example where a formula does not apply. Keep each point to one line.
  3. Error log: for every wrong or guessed question, note the paper and year, the topic, why you went wrong (concept, calculation, misread, time) and the correct idea in one line.

Two habits make notes useful. First, tag each error with its type, so you can see whether you lose more marks to concepts or to careless mistakes. Second, every Sunday, re-solve five questions from your error log without looking at the solution. If you get one right twice, strike it off.

For GATE, also practise with the on-screen virtual calculator, because you must use it in the exam. Do your numerical practice on a similar on-screen calculator rather than a physical one from week 7 onwards.

How should you use official GATE previous year papers?

Use the official papers on gate2027.iitm.ac.in. Its Download page lists question papers with answer keys for 2021 to 2026, paper-wise, and a bulk folder from 2007 to 2026. Solve older years topic-wise in weeks 3 to 12, and keep the latest three years as full timed tests for January.

When we checked on 9 October 2026, the page listed year-wise papers and keys for papers such as CS (two sets), EC, ME and XL, with a Google Drive bulk folder for older years. The page does not say whether answer keys are available for years before 2021, so check solutions carefully for those.

  • Weeks 1-6: after each chapter, solve that chapter's questions from the last 10 years.
  • Weeks 7-12: solve full papers from roughly 2015 to 2022 under time, one or two a week.
  • Weeks 13-16: save 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026 papers for full exam simulations.
  • Syllabus check: if an old question is from a topic not in the 2027 syllabus, note it and move on.

For RA, the new Robotics and Automation paper, there are no past papers at all. Use questions from the related parts of ME, EE, EC or IN, as explained in our GATE 2027 RA paper guide.

If IIT Madras posts an official mock test link closer to the exam, as earlier GATE editions have done, use it at least once to learn the interface. We did not see one on the site on 9 October 2026.

What should a weekly GATE 2027 study rhythm look like?

A steady week has five study days on subjects, one day for a full paper and its analysis, and one lighter day for notes and the error log. General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics get 30 to 45 minutes every day, because they appear in almost every paper.

DayWeeks 1-12Weeks 13-16
Monday to FridayCore subject revision plus topic-wise past questions; 30-45 min of GA and MathsShort notes plus targeted practice on error-log topics
SaturdayFull 3-hour past paper in exam conditionsFull 3-hour timed paper
SundayAnalyse the paper; update notes and error logSecond full paper (alternate weeks) or analysis plus error-log re-solve

Analysis should take about as long as the paper itself. Mark every question as correct, wrong, guessed or skipped, and note the time spent. Look for questions you skipped but could have solved; those are the cheapest marks to gain.

Is there an official GATE topic weightage?

No. IIT Madras publishes the syllabus and the question paper pattern, but not a topic-wise weightage. Coaching institutes publish their own analyses, and they often differ. If you rely on one, check which institute made it and which years it counts, and confirm it against your own count.

The official pattern is fixed: 65 questions, 100 marks, 3 hours. General Aptitude carries 15 marks in every paper, and for most engineering papers, 13 of the 85 subject marks are Engineering Mathematics. Only MCQs have negative marking. You can count your own topic spread from the last five years of your paper in about two evenings.

What should CS, DA, EC, EE, ME and CE candidates focus on?

The plan above works for every paper, but each paper has its own heavy subjects and traps. These notes are based on the section headings in the official GATE syllabus; check your 2027 syllabus PDF, because IIT Madras says the syllabi were revised.

  • CS: a long list of subjects, from discrete maths, digital logic and computer organisation to algorithms, theory of computation, compilers, operating systems, databases and networks. Many questions are MSQ, so practise careful option checking. CS has two sets of question papers in recent years; solve both.
  • DA: heavy on probability, statistics, linear algebra and calculus, along with programming, data structures, algorithms, databases, machine learning and AI. DA has fewer past papers than older papers, so add relevant maths and algorithms questions from CS papers.
  • EC: networks, signals and systems, devices, analog and digital circuits, control, communications and electromagnetics. Signals and networks feed into several other subjects, so revise them early.
  • EE: circuits, machines, power systems, control, measurements, electronics and power electronics. Many questions are numerical, so practise speed with the virtual calculator.
  • ME: applied mechanics and design, fluid mechanics and thermal sciences, and materials, manufacturing and industrial engineering. Keep a separate formula sheet for thermodynamics and manufacturing tables.
  • CE: structural, geotechnical, water resources, environmental, transportation and geomatics. The syllabus is wide; use past papers to decide where to go deep and where to only learn standard results.

If you are also writing IIT JAM 2027 on 14 February, note that 14 February is also a GATE day. Wait for the GATE paper-wise schedule before planning both.

What should you do after GATE 2027?

The result is scheduled for 19 March 2027. M.Tech admissions at IITs run through COAP and at NITs through CCMT, while PhD and PSU routes have their own timelines. Read our IIT M.Tech admission 2027 via COAP and CCMT guide before the result so you know which score bands lead where.

For every GATE date in one place, keep our GATE 2027 exam date and registration hub and the IIT exam dates 2027 calendar bookmarked. If a younger sibling is still choosing a B.Tech college, our guide to colleges for a low JEE Main rank is a good starting point.

Final word: your GATE 2027 preparation checklist

A realistic GATE 2027 preparation plan is about steady revision and honest analysis, not covering every book. Use these 16 weeks to fix weak areas, practise with official past papers and finish with timed full papers.

  • This week: confirm your form is complete; the late-fee window closes on 12 October 2026.
  • Download the 2027 syllabus PDF for your paper and mark changes against your notes.
  • Download official past papers and answer keys from the GATE 2027 Download page.
  • Start your formula sheet, concept page and error log for each subject.
  • Take one full past paper every week from late November, two a week from January.
  • Check your exam city on 4 January 2027 and watch for the admit card date.
  • Stop new topics by 18 January; revise only from your own notes after that.

Frequently asked questions

Is 16 weeks enough for GATE 2027 preparation?

It is enough to revise and practise properly if you have already covered most of your B.Tech core subjects. It is tight if you are starting from zero. In that case, focus on the subjects that carry many questions in your paper's past papers, plus General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics, and skip low-return topics instead of trying to finish everything.

When is the GATE 2027 exam?

GATE 2027 is scheduled on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027, as per the official important dates page of IIT Madras. The result is on 19 March 2027. The paper-wise schedule has not been released yet, so plan to be ready by 6 February, the first possible exam day.

Where can I download official GATE previous year papers?

The Download page of gate2027.iitm.ac.in lists question papers and answer keys for 2021 to 2026, paper-wise, and a bulk download folder covering 2007 to 2026. Use these instead of coaching PDFs, because they show the exact question format, and check older questions against the revised 2027 syllabus.

How many mock tests should I take before GATE 2027?

There is no fixed number. A practical rhythm is one full past paper every one or two weeks in the first half, rising to two full-length timed papers a week in the last four weeks. The analysis after each paper matters more than the count, so keep an error log.

Which subjects should I revise first for GATE 2027?

Start with General Aptitude and Engineering Mathematics, because together they appear in almost every paper, then move to the core subjects where your past-paper scores are weakest. Do not trust any fixed weightage list unless it names its source; count questions yourself from the last five years of your paper.

Can I still change my GATE 2027 paper?

Yes, if you are registered. The correction window from 14 to 21 October 2026 allows changes to paper, category, exam city and some personal details, with fees where applicable, as per the official brochure. New registrations with late fee close on 12 October 2026.
