Working professionals and college faculty can apply for PhD under the External Registration Programme (ERP). They need two years of full-time work as on 1 January and official sponsorship from their employer.

What is the IISc PhD application fee?

The fee is Rs 800 for General, OBC and EWS candidates and Rs 400 for SC, ST and PwD. ERP candidates of every category pay Rs 2,000. You can pay by net banking, card or UPI, and bank charges are yours to bear.

How does IISc select PhD students?

IISc shortlists applicants on their national entrance test score and/or qualifying degree, then holds an in-person interview. Selection depends on the interview. Some departments add an aptitude test or preliminary interview before the final one. ERP candidates are selected on the interview alone.

Since interviews are in person on 16-20 November 2026, plan travel to Bengaluru early. Read the department's own page for its shortlisting cut-offs and research areas; our IIT and IISc PhD admission 2027 guide explains the interview style in general.

What scholarship do IISc PhD students get?

All regular PhD students get a scholarship from MHRD, CSIR, UGC, ICMR, DBT, DST, AICTE or DAE (NBHM), depending on their mode of entry. IISc also has merit-based donor fellowships that can raise the monthly amount up to two times. The mid-year notice does not print the rupee amount.

In other words, the agency that pays you depends on how you entered: a CSIR JRF holder, for example, is paid under CSIR's scheme. Check the consolidated fellowships page at odaa.iisc.ac.in for current entitlements before you plan finances.

EWS and OBC-NCL candidates need certificates issued on or after 1 April 2026 (FY 2026-27) at the interview and at admission. Apply for a fresh one now if yours is older.
