Who is eligible for IIT Roorkee PhD admission?

Master's degree holders need CGPA 6.0 or 60% (5.5 or 55% for SC, ST and PwD) plus a national test such as GATE, CEED, JEST or UGC/CSIR NET. Four-year bachelor's holders need CGPA 7.5 or 75% plus a national test. Some graduates with CGPA 8.0 are exempt from the test.

  • Test exempt: B.Tech or M.Sc from MoE-funded technical institutions (erstwhile CFTIs) with CGPA 8.0 or above, and any bachelor's or master's from an IIT with CGPA 8.0 or above.
  • Medical graduates: MBBS, BDS, BAMS or BHMS with CGPA 6.0 or 60% do not need a national test; MS and MD holders are exempt from both CGPA and test rules.
  • NET: UGC-NET or CSIR-NET including lectureship (Assistant Professorship) or PhD-only qualification is accepted.
  • Final-year students: may apply if they finish all exams before registration; use your pre-final CGPA in the form.

Each department adds its own minimum qualification and specialisation rules, listed department-wise in the brochure.

What are the Golden Girl and SAKUNTALA schemes?

IIT Roorkee has two routes only for women. The Golden Girl scheme gives direct PhD admission, by interview, to first-rank holders (gold medallists) of the qualifying degree from an IIT or a university in the latest NIRF overall top 50. Seats are supernumerary and the national test is waived.

The SAKUNTALA fellowship is for women with a B.Tech, B.E., B.Arch or B.Des from an MoE-funded technical institution and CGPA 8.5 or more. GATE or CEED is waived. Both routes pay a fellowship at par with institute assistantship. Appearing students cannot use the Golden Girl route.

Which departments are open for spring 2027?

The spring brochure lists around 30 departments, centres and the school across the Roorkee and Saharanpur campuses, each with its own minimum qualification and specialisations. There is no fixed cap: you can apply to as many departments as you want, paying the fee for each one.

The Roorkee campus list runs from Architecture and Planning, Civil, Chemical, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, Mechanical and Industrial, and Metallurgical Engineering to Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Earth Sciences, Hydrology, Management Studies, Design and HSS. It also includes newer centres such as the Mehta Family School of Data Science and AI.

At the Saharanpur campus, PhDs are offered in Paper and Packaging Technology, Polymer and Process Engineering, and Applied Mathematics and Scientific Computing. These three register on 7 January 2027, a day before the others.

IIT Roorkee also runs a separate rolling PhD advertisement, a project-category admission and an Extensive Professional Experience scheme, each with its own portal. The 20 October deadline is for the regular spring round.

What is the IIT Roorkee PhD application fee?

The fee is Rs 500 per department for general, GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL candidates and Rs 250 per department for SC, ST and PwD. It is paid online by net banking or card and is non-refundable.

CategoryFee per department
GEN / GEN-EWS / OBC-NCLRs 500
SC / ST / PwDRs 250

If a payment is debited but shows pending, the FAQ says to pay again; any extra amount is refunded within four weeks.

How are PhD scholars selected at IIT Roorkee?

Selection is on merit. Each department shortlists applicants on qualifications and experience, then holds a written test, an interview, or both. Dates, tentatively 16-21 November 2026, are sent to shortlisted candidates and posted on the department portal.

Departments can limit interview calls to a "reasonable number", so a high CGPA or GATE score matters at the screening stage. Read the general IIT PhD admission guide for SOP and interview tips.

What stipend does an IIT Roorkee PhD scholar get?

Full-time regular scholars receive an Institute Assistantship for up to five years, and are expected to give up to 10 hours a week to assigned work. The spring brochure does not print the monthly rupee amount, so check it with the academic office before you rely on a figure.

  • The FAQ says all selected Indian candidates get assistantship, except in-service, MoU, externally funded, or already-funded scholars.
  • Holders of UGC, CSIR, DST, ICMR or DBT fellowships are paid by their agency, not by the institute.
  • Golden Girl and SAKUNTALA fellowships are at par with institute assistantship.
