Who is eligible and which GATE paper do you need?

You need GATE in an accepted paper plus a B.E., B.Tech, B.Arch, four-year B.S. or B.Sc, or a relevant master's in science. For 2026, GATE 2024, 2025 and 2026 scores were valid. By the same rule, 2027 should accept GATE 2025-2027, but confirm in the 2027 brochure.

  • Paper match: each programme accepts only certain combinations of degree discipline and GATE paper. For example, Computer Science takes only GATE CS and Data Science and AI only GATE DA, from any discipline.
  • Check before paying: the "Eligible Programmes" tool on mtechadm.iitm.ac.in and Table 3 of the brochure show what your combination allows.
  • Final-year students: in 2026, results had to be likely by 15 July 2026.
  • IIT graduates: an IIT B.Tech with CGPA 8.0 or more can apply without GATE.

If you are still choosing papers, our GATE 2027 paper codes guide lists all 30 papers.

What were the IIT Madras M.Tech cut-offs in 2026?

IIT Madras publishes official GATE cut-off scores after each cycle. In 2026, the General HTTA cut-off was 900 for Computer Science and 860 for Data Science and AI. Core branches closed lower, for example 709 in Structural Engineering and 572 in Chemical Engineering.

These are IIT Madras's official 2026 non-PwD cut-offs for the main degree and GATE paper combination of each programme. They are not 2027 cut-offs. Some programmes have different cut-offs for other degree backgrounds, so read the full PDF.

How do you apply and how do COAP offers work?

Register on COAP first, because IIT Madras makes the COAP registration number a mandatory field. Then apply on mtechadm.iitm.ac.in, choose your programmes and pay the fee. Offers come on COAP in rounds, and you accept, hold or reject them there.

In 2026, the fee was Rs 300 for SC, ST, PwD and female candidates and Rs 600 for others, per application. You need a separate application for each GATE score year you use. Admission for most programmes follows GATE score order and your choices, though the brochure lists a suitability test or interview for some cases. Round rules are the same for all IITs.

Frequently asked questions

When will IIT Madras M.Tech admission 2027 start?

IIT Madras has not announced 2027 dates. In 2026, the M.Tech and M.A. portal opened on 28 March 2026 and closed on 28 April 2026 at 11:59 pm, after a one-day extension from 27 April. GATE 2027 results are due on 19 March 2027, so a similar late-March opening is likely, but treat that as tentative.

What GATE score is required for IIT Madras M.Tech?

There is no fixed score. IIT Madras's official 2026 cut-off list shows General HTTA cut-offs of 900 for Computer Science, 860 for Data Science and AI, 871 for Microelectronics and VLSI Design, 797 for Mechanical Design and 709 for Structural Engineering. These are 2026 figures and will change in 2027.

Is COAP registration needed for IIT Madras M.Tech?

Yes. IIT Madras says COAP is not an application portal, but the COAP registration number is a mandatory field on its own M.Tech application portal. So register on COAP first, then apply on mtechadm.iitm.ac.in. Offers are later shown and accepted on COAP in rounds.

What is HTTA and Non-HTTA at IIT Madras?

HTTA means Half-Time Teaching Assistantship. HTTA students get Rs 12,400 a month for up to 22 months and assist their department for 8 hours a week. Non-HTTA seats give no financial assistance, and such students arrange their own accommodation. Programme codes ending in Y are HTTA and those ending in N are Non-HTTA.

Can I get IIT Madras M.Tech without GATE?

Only in limited cases. The 2026 brochure lets IIT B.Tech graduates with a CGPA of 8.0 or more apply without a GATE score, and their applications are reviewed by departments. Sponsored candidates need two years of experience and first class or 60% (55% for SC and ST), plus full-salary leave for 24 months.

What is the IIT Madras M.Tech application fee?

In 2026, the application fee was Rs 300 for SC, ST, PwD and female candidates and Rs 600 for all others. The fee is per application, and IIT Madras asks for a separate application for each GATE score year you use, and another if you also apply as an IIT graduate.
